Is there a way I can be on the net (not iSL) and send an email directly to somebody so that it comes to them iSL as an IM? If so, how?

You can reply to an IM they sent you when you were offworld if it got sent on to you as an email - for about four days until the id expires.

You can use http://www.zonkster.com/index.htm - but that doesn't appear as an IM and can get missed if your target isn't watching chat. You don't even need to register to send a message, although it can be useful to do so.

There are several lightweight SL clients like Metabolt ( http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Alternate_viewers#Third-party_Viewers )which I haven't bothered to use and which doubtless Lindal, Amaranthim, or someone else who has me on ignore will come along and tell you about soon.

Pep (There are other ways too - I think I saw a new method using a HUD being promoted in Avatars United and I tried GnomiChat once but it was in early beta it seemed like to me.)

How about if I don't have a recent IM from them?

Then you need an inworld object as a gateway, an objects email adress never changes.
you need 2 things for this to work, the uuid of the person you want to send to so you can plug that in the needed script and the uuid of the object so you can email it.
It's clumsy but it works.

I'm going to add this to my site. It's easy as pie to make just need to change the HUD and add a form to the site.

It's on my signature. Though here it is: http://sltwisteddetails.com/

Give me a few days before I add this, and it will have to be OPT IN, I'm not going to send messages to anyone not wanting them. So your friends will have to register on my site (with the HUD), agree to receive messages then the HUD will deliver the messages to them.

I could do the basics very fast but the options need some thought.

If you have an iPhone they have 2 apps. I use the sparkle one myself. It works beautifully. You are logged in as if you are physically inworld. You can converse, accept inventory and pay someone.

It GENERALLY works. emailing an object, and vice versa, sometimes fails. It helps to put the object up in a build box in a robust sim.

I made a script like this that I use to keep in touch with good friends:
> Configured via notecard with a list of avatars to check up on, as well as the email address I want it to respond to.
> On rez or reset, the object sends me an email with its UUID.
> When I ping it, it responds with a list of the avatars it knows about that are currently online.
> I can send it a message for any avatar it knows about, and it will forward the message. If the avatar wants to respond, they know to send me a real IM, and from then on I rely on SL's none-too-solid IM-to-email service.

IM's

I have an iPhone and I use Sparkle - its a great tool for 'emergency' situations where I need to contact someone and I'm not in front of the computer. I'm curious what the other app for the iPhone is? I keep watching for an app that allows you to actually see like your inworld. With Sparkle though, you can't see or give inventory - just send and recieve IMs and money. If they added the inventory feature to it - it would be 1000 times better.

It's called Touch Lite and it does more than the Sparkle app. It also requires 10MB of memory. I don't know if you can see inworld or not. The description doesn't say. But it definitely has more features than Sparkle.

Forums will probably be closed before I'm done but should have something working soon.

Spakle doesn;t load for me...

Can you Sparkle/iTouch users give me a clue? On my iTouch (OS 2.2.1) Sparkle starts "loading..." for a few seconds and drops back to the on-screen icon. This is with an excellent wi-fi connection.

OK halfway done, the sending of messages is ok, just need to do the reading now:

http://sltwisteddetails.com/index.php/resident/index/key/44ba13fd-6c7d-4b35-ba5a-8b6825ebe484/

You'll have a captcha to fill if you are not logged in (and the resident needs to accept this kind of messages anyway).

Cee, everyone once in awhile I get that. But I am on my iPhone and I using the 3G network. I never logged on Sparkle via wi-fi. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
