As a follow on from the thread about the RL / SL relationship, I was prompted to consider the that totally in-world contrast between virtual reality and virtual unreality. What I mean is the contrast between what looks real and plausible, even if it couldn't actually exist in RL, and those creations and scenes that look totally unconvincing. A nicely made hover ship might look convincing even if it would not work in RL. But if you take a ride in that hover ship and a big green rabbit floats past on a pink translucent cube, the illusion of reality is completely shattered. I'm not against virtual unreality - it can be funny - I'm just just highlighting the divide between the two concepts. If I go flying, I put on my jetpack, crash helmet and safety suit, even though I don't need to - as it feels more real. Yet I do TP to get to other sims and I take my sky platform for granted. Funny old world!!!!

Not sure what you're talking about, but...

I really wish the whole "sinking while crossing sims" thing would get worked on so that vehicle travel would be more useful. I'd like to have all those roads out there actually used for vehicles! Same with flying anything faster than a WWI bi-plane or riding in a sailboat.
Being able to physically travel to a location instead of just TP there would make the world as a whole more 3d. It would also make the compass more useful than just "there's someone to the SW of us".
Through a fluke I found out that an area I frequented was actually only 3 sims south of where I live! That prompted me to look up a few other places and it turns out I could easily be driving/flying to these places!
I think a lot of people would be into guided tours on buses or zeppelins or something like that if travel was more tangible of a thing in SL.

I think the great thing about SL is that it can be pretty much as real or unreal as you want. I happen to stand in awe at some of the builds that look like exact replicas of their RL counterparts, whereas I will stand in equal awe of some of the more fantastically out of the blue builds too. I guess since I expect SL to have both the realistic and the fantastic, it doesn't bother me to snap between the two on a regular basis. It doesn't shatter my 'virtual reality,' because what Second Life is. Besides, when one role plays, one tends to learn to 'ignore' things that don't fit the 'reality' one is supposed to be in. In SL, one is simply more encouraged to do so

The virtual reality and virtual unreality live alongside each other in SL and there's nothing wrong with that on the whole but sometimes they do clash. I too find walking around the world quite rewarding and I've recently bought a swim animation so I can explore the seas too (SLSwim 2.0) At my Egotherapy Centre I have on display the world's largest paintbrush. Actually it's a replica and it's slightly bigger than the original but don't let on! The original was destroyed by robo-termites in Goguen sandbox.

Funny old world!!!! I understand what you are talking about. One thing that always confuses me is people who don't have any common sense. Walk into a role play sim totally out of character and wonder why people are upset It really messes up the game play but disrespectful to those who work hard to create a special atmosphere.

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.
