For me, the opening of the source code means that people will create small tools which are designed to automate all tasks which needed manual input up to now.
In the end, we will see a myriad of "automatic trading tools" doing business with each other.
There will ne automatic buying and selling of land and objects; and especially, all "Camping" chairs in casinos will die. People will create tools which will look look out for empty chairs and will simulate active camping.
An interesting perspective.

Gorden Such bots already exist, interestingly enough.

Camping trades a minimal amount of L$ for an increase in traffic. A zombie or campbot generates the exact same amount of traffic so unless someone's expectation is that most money will be spent on location (ie casinos) nothing will change, unfortunately.

I wonder if any of the owners of institutions that use camp chairs actually use alts to camp in them. Just an idle thought. EG: alt camps, spends all online there (max traffic allocation). main turns off the chair, alt signs off.

Really, the only question that begs to be asked in my mind is....why do you care?

Anyone can use them for traffic.
If you have an Island and a new establishment you want to get up on the popular list all you have to do is feed the sim name and xy to the bot and place about 45-60 up in the air somewhere or on dance pads, stripper poles. Stripper bots, now there's an idea.
Get your name on the list and as new residents pop in and start hanging around exit the bots.
Or let's say you are having a tiff with another resident and you want to grief their event so no one can attend...send in the bots.
How about you want to impress a corporation with the resident numbers and possible revenue...send in the bots.
Maybe they will add A.I. so at least we can have conversations with them.
If they are going to allow NPCs they might as well call it a game as well.
As long as people can sit in the camp chairs, play the slots to increase their pay and possibly win some money on the slots and are profitable to the owner....they aren't going anywhere.

I always thought bots would have a useful application in snookering corporations. In fact, I think bots already do have a useful application in snookering corporations, in that they are counted in the numbers of people online and in the total number of residents. Which is in LL's best interest as well, with their "growth at any cost" policy. coco

maybe; but in order to create traffic, it would be sufficient to create an alt account which is simply hanging around in place.

Perhaps, some of the reasons expressed here is reasons why the client has been closed for awhile. There area ways to deal with these issues, however. I'm sure LL will eventually allow multiple clients to connect from the same computer. However, you'll probably need a key for each one at such time. Clients without a registered key I'd expect to be very limited in what they can do.
For example, traffic is only counted for those with registered keys.

You can actually connect now via the same computer as long as you have the accounts, you just have to use the -multiple command line option to do it and as long as you have seperate accounts and a powerful enough machine there's no real limit to the number of accounts you can login from one computer.

With a8800 GC. and 1000 watt PS. i think you might get about 6fps basic with each. and who knows the stablity......... and again people fail to forget..the power cost......it just does not add up! the cost of running mutli 24 hours a day and the money you get just don`t make sence. Just buy money.

Usagi, it's highly likely that it's cheaper to run a collection of bots in your own club in order to bump up the traffic than it would be to bribe real players with incentives such as camping chairs, free slots, etc. It isn't about making money directly so much as increasing the traffic so as to get a higher placement in the search engine listings.

LL needs to change the search
01-09-2007 09:10
How about changing the search? Make the owners pay Lindens to be placed up higher in the places search like in the classifieds.
edited to say:
I guess open source wasn't the "end of camping" like you thought. Open source was a huge mistake!
