Where am I? A question about Continents and the map

Hi there folks, I'm a relative 'newbie' to SL having only been a resident for about a week. It's a fantastic place and I'm constantly finding great new places but I'm curious about the layout of the SL 'world' and can't find much info about this subject.

The large land masses are called 'continents' right, like in RL? I have heard references to names of some of these but can't find any definitive list. Also, what is the 'Mainland' defined as? Is it just the large continent that seems to be in the centre of the map (the one that has a large snowy area to the SW of it) or are the other continents defined as 'Mainland' too? What are the continents called?

I have purchased a small parcel of land in Narugo which is a grid square to the North of the Northern of the two Eastern continents, where is that exactly?

Any answers would be appreciated!

Regards,

Gaz

PS: Last week, I found a website (external to the main SL site) with a list of all the grid squares names but I can't for the life of me find it now, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Gaz, see this thread: /327/a8/195860/1.html

You'll find that there's a lot less certainty in the Names Of Places In Our Virtual World than you might expect.

Mainland is land that was designed and set up by Linden Lab, and then sold (by means of auction) to SL residents. The distinction is between mainland and "private islands", which are isolated sims purchased by residents from LL, but not contiguous to other existing land.

Depending on how you count/aggregate, there are a few: the northern one you saw, the southern one to the southeast of it, and the bundle of areas to the far east of the map which are currently being auctioned.

The map should tell you -- scroll out and around.

Thanks Lindal, a very interesting read there. It appears that I am based in the South of Corsica then as the region I'm in doesn't seem to be finished and it's just N of the Nautilus continent. I had assumed Nautilus to be the Southern of the Eastern continents and Corsica to be the Northern one so that's interesting as the SE continent has no name! Is there a map of what the finished Corsica continent will look like?
