O.K., tis me again lol. Next to me at my first SL home now, land is for sale, it has been, but they have just put it on top of a huge brick block the size I suppose of the sim. I had to fly up sometime to get to the top of to see just what had been put in there, (t's like outside my window on the line lol), moved in for the ocean view for a now view of New York, with a bit of ocean, depending on which way you look. How tall can things be here? Say you buy top of the hill, does it then become a game between land owners to see who can build the tallest foundations? I don't want to play that way haha why can't they just be nice? Just wondering how high one can build in SL and not break any rules? I don't wish to ever break any. However in my own building I spend most of my time trying to make what I build pleasing to my nieghbors, as much as possible, so my home is no eye sore to them or takes nothing from their enjoyment of the game/Secondlife. Seems my new neighbor or the land owner does not feel the same. Thanks again for helping, your all just the greatest

(let me guess....English is not your first language?) Are you saying that your neighbor has built a huge tower next toyour house? If you click on it, can you tell if it is made of normal sized prims? The largest size prim that is "supposed" to be used in SL is 10 x 10 x 10....it sounds to me like your neighbor might be using mega prims which are frowned upon by Linden Labs unless they are used in a constructive manner. And I would guess that builing a huge tower that blots out your entire view would not be constructive. Check into if they are mega prims or not. If they are, then notify the owner of them that they are being used in an offensive manner and that you will notify the Lindens if they are not removed. You can also file an Abuse report if the neighbor does not comply with your wishes. If they are not mega prims, then another option is to put your house up into the sky. Buy a flight feather (or some other way to fly) and some teleports and then change z positin of all of your items to a higher altitude. ( a quick and easy way is to just change the first number on your Z position for all of your items...for instance, the Z height of your house is at 120...change it to 320.....your bed is at 122, then change it to 322..and so on ) Either that or pack everything up and pull it back out once you get your house set at the height you want....but I find changing the Z heights quicker, and everything stays set up in the new position. (also, turn on "view transparent" in case you have some hidden poseballs that need ot be moved as well) Once you get all set up, use the teleports to zip from the ground to your house.

To answer the direct question (the person above got the implied one)
There are no building limits on mainland. At all. Nada. None. Zilch. Zero. You an build as high as you like- and so can all of your neighbors.

From: Markubis Brentano Hi Trella, I'm having a little trouble following what you are saying. (let me guess....English is not your first language?)
Are you saying that your neighbor has built a huge tower next toyour house? If you click on it, can you tell if it is made of normal sized prims? The largest size prim that is "supposed" to be used in SL is 10 x 10 x 10....it sounds to me like your neighbor might be using mega prims which are frowned upon by Linden Labs unless they are used in a constructive manner. Once you get all set up, use the teleports to zip from the ground to your house. If they have used megaprims to enclose their land to obtain a certain desired enclosed effect, ask them if they will make the prims transparent on your side. That is what I do when I use them. I have an enclosed forest that is becoming beautiful. I want the sense of enclosure I can achieve with megaprim forest panels along the sim border lines. What I have done is made them transparent from the outside so that everyone else can see our lovely world, and phantom so that they can fly on through or over without obstacles. Everyone wins. I get my lovely forest, and everyone around me can admire the view, and come on over whenever they want. So try talking to them about it, and see what you can work out. Sometimes just talking to someone can work wonders (although not alway! It would certainly be my first step in the process.) If they are uncooperative, then you will have to consider other means. Maybe they would be willing to put a texture of your choice on the outside of the prims that face you? Especially if they want to keep their side private, and don't want to make it transparent for you to see in. Or you could resort to building your own wall, with an attractive backdrop. Not ideal, but better than nothing. As much as possible, I try to work with my neighbors to resolve things together. They may not even realize they have created a problem for you on your side. (and then there is always the last resort of offering to buy them out!) Good luck. Princess Ivory

From: Markubis Brentano well, there is a limit..768 meters Not really. You can go higher. I've seen builds as high as 4000m. I believe that Bravo Bravo sells something that will do one. There are probably others out there. It's just that you can't "build" per se up there, you have to script the build up over the 768m ceiling and builds above that ceiling are unstable. addendum: Really, however, I believe the OP is asking "How Tall" can one build. There is no limit. There is a 30m linking limit, but a builder doesn't need to link all the prims. There is a 768m ceiling.... a builder can't rez or push a prim past it, but they can script the prim past it. However, builds over that ceiling are unstable. As proof of height, I once had a neighbor who built a 768m tall tower of spinning porn spammage (to harass me into selling my land to her, I suspect). I built a 768m tall wall to block it (and promptly removed it after the lindens investigating my AR of her, saw what she did, gave her an official warning and returned her porn). So your neighbor can build quite a bit further. I would say that you should listen to Princess Ivory's advice and try to work out the issue with your neighbor.

You can move premade builds higher than you can actually build them.

Yep, I've "built" manually over 1km at one point when I was pondering using physical scripts to push higher... but ya know, it's miserable up there! Nothing interesting will work (well, unless you're obsessed by particles ). I eventually decided to cede that altitude to the vehicles and camping bots.
