i tried searching the databases and website and I found nothing on it. Is there a way to change your last name?

I just started and have not played much since I am having graphical issues but this was a question i had during character creation since I could not input the last name I really wanted.

Simple answer: No.

Unfortunately, Linden Labs just isn't set up to change names for existing avatars. Your best bet would be to create an alt with the last name you want, and then transfer inventory to the new alt.

While it's true that LL has on occasion created unique last names for individuals (in the case of AVs for corporate customers, fundraising purposes, or celebrities) these have always been newly created avatars. I know of no case where the name of an AV has actually been changed (but it MIGHT have happened--if anyone knows of a case, let us all in on it!)

I give you the fact that searching for information in SL can be hard sometimes, but see what you can do with a little bit of patience and luck...;)

Can I change my last name?

We've gotten requests from lovebirds, as well as people who decided a new last name would suit them better at a later point in their Second Life.

Currently, we don't have a system in a place to change last names. This involves both policy and technical reasons. After all, we'd want to make such a system easy-to-use and broadly accessible to the community.

Didn't Torley just make a new Linden account? I'm pretty sure that's what happened with Hamlet...

It's not as simple as just creating an alt, and transferring assets... many items in your inventory you might find are not transferrable.

There was a Linden making some noise about someday enabling the ability to change names.. would have to go digging.. might only be first name... but yeah you're kinda stuck right now.. as I understand it you can't change your name due to the way it's keyed to all your account data.. and asset transfer to an alt is not practical if you have items that are not transferrable.

In Torley's case, he was a regular resident who became a Linden.. I'm sure it wasn't a problem to have his prior assets transferred to his Linden account.. just probably not something that would be practical to do for the masses. As an aside, items ARE occasionally transferred to/from the teen grid and main grid. Each case probably requires a script of some sort to be written manually.

The Fairchangs are the only examples I know of. Someday it will be possible, but at the moment it isn't.

It's can be done. I know others - in real life - who have gotten changes. LL just doesn't like to do it. I don't imagine it is really difficult, just an entry in a name table. The system generally knows you by UUID, your name is just "decoration".

I know a few people that have, but then again LLabs never blabs it to the general public.

Why LLabs allowed this to happen really set some people in a sh@t about it. LLabs did make a mistake allowing this.

There was a thread about this. I think Flip posted all the name changes thus far, and aside from Torley it was mostly just fixing capitalization and forcing name changes on people with inappropriate first names (HumpMe comes to mind).
