on the PC, you'd hit CTRL-ALT-T to make that go away. (you've somehow enabled "view transparencies"... I'd wager you see red "skis" on everyone's feet as well.) What you're seeing there is the transparent haze around the "particles" being generated by the objects.
I can't find the command key shortcut for the mac.. but it's available under the "View" menu... about 2/3 of the way down. it should say something like "X Highlight Transparent" (along with the hotkey combo). Make that "X" go away, and all the red tinting should go away too.
Give that a try. if not.. get back to us, and we'll see what we can do for ya.

It's Ctrl-Alt-T on the Mac too. Or Ctrl-Option-T if your Option key doesn't also say Alt on it.

From: Head Vanbeeck Well, Whenever I click a scripted object after I do a bunch of red or blue cones come up. Its starting to bother me. Heres a picture. Sounds like you turned on "Client / Show Updates" (Ctrl-Alt-Shift-U - love those Linden shortcuts ). The blue and red cones represent the "severity" of the update I think?... and are an indicator of how much lag an object in contributing depending on how dense the cone gets. Or that's how it was explained to me anyway .

I think Kitty Barnett is right looking at the picture.. I did that myself the other day clicking 'Show Updates' thinking I was going to get a history of all the things that were okay prior to any 'updates' which broke them. Nice FPS btw
