Is there a limit regarding how high you can elevate your property??? Does it depend on the terrain your property is located on??

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if there is a real limit... but I do know that the surronding land is of infleunce.

Behind my house there is a hill. I couldn't bring down the land at the border of land, because the land of my neighboor was much higher.

Yeah,,, thats what it seems like to me to. From the little experimentation I've done, you really can't elevate or lower your land that much. I think.

Most mainland is set to +/-4 of the underlying RAW data file landscaping. On some older sims - and new private islands - I believe you can do +/-100m but there's no way to get around that limit as far as I can tell.

The reason being that people could use it as a griefing tool to 'bury' a neighbour in a big hole if they owned land around them. The simple fact that 99% of us would have perfectly useful, legitimate uses for a greater level of landscaping seems irrelevant.

On my 8000 sq m plot I have two corners, one too high and one too low, that prevent me from flattening the land completely. It's quite annoying but there really is nothing I can do about it, so I just have to be creative with the landscaping.

On the main grid, most sims have a limit of +-4m. Check the following list for more info:

http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=235

Private estates have a a limit of +-100m, but this can be restricted via estate tools, so if buying/renting in one of these estates, it's best to ask the estate owner.

The only other thing I would point out is that these limits are about the reverted 'baked' shape. When you first purchase land, the previous resident may not have left it at that level, it may already be edited to its max or min limit .

Thank you all so much for the information. Now at least I know what to expect regarding the demographics of the land in question. This will help me with future plans regarding additional land.

If you do want your build higher than ground, or you're on a sloped plot - you can build just like the real thing, and put your house on a platform with supporting legs. You can put a 'fake' garage underneath, for example.

However, this probably isn't a suitable solution in all cases........

Haven't tried it yet, but on a private island, you MAY be able to exceed the +/- 100 Meter terraform limit by first elevating the land a great deal within that limit, and then having the sim owner re-bake the terrain to set the 'zero point' at the new levels. Then raise again, etc...

I wouldn't advise this under most circumstances, however. The terrain mesh is pretty coarse, and streaching it excessively gets bad looking results. Still, it might be a way to get some stunningly tall mountains built in the center of a large cluster of private sims.

As far as I am aware, this would not be an option on Mainland properties, even if you purchased the entire sim. Mainland land owners can't access the estate controls that private island owners and their estate managers have.

I've been hitting against this limitation with the land my store is on. It's on a sloped area, so when I recently expanded the store I had to move it further from the road in order to flatten out a large enough area. That was annoying.

That said, I got creative with one bit of land that was poking through, and turned it into a planter. hee hee
