How do you type a command, as opposed to chat?
I'm trying to lock the doors of my new house, and the instructions simply say, "Type 'lock'" but that just results in my avi saying, "Lock" and nothing else happening.
Help please!

In my house you had to click the door first and then type the command.

Help please! Well.. You may have to put a notecard in the door with your name on it.. There are lots of differant ways people set those up.. there also may be a certain channel you have to use... or it may in fact be locking.. bring one of your friends over and have them try the door.. If you are still having problems, i'm me in world, I can take a look at it and tell u what you need to do Jeza

Are you typing *exactly* what the instructions say? I ask because that is a common mistake, one I have been guilty of as well. Do CAPS matter? Is the lock 'listening' at a certain channel? Usually these things are set up not to react to things that might be said in conversation. A lot of scripters either let a door listen at a certain channel (in that case you would have to type "/# lock", in which # is the number of the channel), or make the command something easy you would not normally say. For instance, I have a door that responds to "/door", but not to "door".

There's no easy answer for this, it depends on how it is scripted. I would suggest to double check the contents of the door and reread the note carefully, if one is there. If not in the General Tab, in edit on door, see who created it and give them a IM asking about it BTW: The only stupid question is the one not asked

There are ton of variables. The door may be tuned to a specific channel, 7 for instance. So you would have to type: /7 lock. Make sure as suggested you are typing exactly the wording given in the instructions. Most scripted objects will answer your command in the chat box, using green lettering I think.

Help please! A lot of prefab builders give you a few seconds to type it after closing the door. It differs from builder to builder. Open and shut it again, quickly type lock and see what happens. I see you've already got lots of excellent responses though. Let us know how you get on. It's not a stupid question.

Thanks everyone for the help. Jeza came over and tried for a good long time to figure out the problem to no avail. Looks like I need to find the former owner.
Thanks, Jeza, for reaffirming for me how great the people in SL can be!
