Go Go GO!
Yaaaay team! No seriously.. this is just OMG wonderful good news. Kudos to the developers to have gotten so far as to allow Login, movement, chat, and object creation! The first glorious steps towards having the "offline sim" we've all wanted on wednesdays. SOmeplace we could have our own LAN based SL gatherings... our own "native" offline builder.. using the actual client.. with our own offline script compiler and all of that. This is BEAUTIFUL to see. You guys rock! You have the ball.. so RUN! ![]() _____________________

Except, today's newly-released ToS has language against "server emulators". I guess we'll see soon enough.

Don't think the TOS can decide what I'm allowed to do with my computer on my spare time, can it? Unless it uses Lindens servers of course.

I've heard it said that LL sold itself to its VC's as "we will be the Microsoft of VR", but that they've known all along that they can only hope to be the Red Hat of VR.
I don't know anything about their business model, but it does seem likely to me that this sort of resource-intensive VR can't scale the way it should while remaining centralized. After all, Google doesn't host the WWW, all it does is index it, and it already has to be huge. If we imagine an SL-type world the size of the WWW, it would require a company several orders of magnitude larger -- it'd be more like the US government than like Microsoft. I find it much more plausible (and satisfying) to imagine many open-source sims and a protocol to link them. IMO that's where this is going; the only question is whether LL will be the ones to take us there. Being Red Hat is nothing to sneeze at...if LL's idealistic side can win this one, I'll go with them and be happy. My personal stake in it is that I feel that LL's sim setup is awesome proof of concept -- they took a big risk and it's truly visionary, and I hope they all live happily ever after -- but I'm looking for a lot more flexibility than the intensely reality-based model that we live2 in now. This here is nice, but it's like a WWW where everybody's page is made from the same template.... |

I don't know anything about their business model, but it does seem likely to me that this sort of resource-intensive VR can't scale the way it should while remaining centralized. Probably LL's ultimate plan is to get out of the business of writing either client or server source code, just open it all up and let other people do it. If this enables the 3D web to grow explosively, LL can make more money as a niche player in a huge market segment than as the sole owner of a small market segment. In particular, with Linden dollars LL has created something that has so far completely eluded the 2D web: a working micropayment system. Remember Beenz and Flooz and other dot-bomb virtual currencies? They weren't bad ideas in principle, they could just never get over the chicken-and-egg barrier to acceptance. If LL plays their cards right, they can set themselves up as the PayPal of the 3D web. Indeed, it's not out of the question that Linden dollars could someday be accepted for payment on the traditional 2D web. If they can pull it off, it could be big. It would also mean washing their hands of all the pesky resident drama and, you know, that whole "SL is a country" vision thing. |

And then the Justice Department will subpoena their records to track micro-terrorist fund transfers. The CIA already has an island where they keep the ones they've caught... |

That's a darn good point. They did it by tying the micropayment currency to an addictive drug, but you might be right that the currency could turn out to be as important as the drug. |
