Hi,
This may seem an odd question but I am wondering if there is any device, gadget or hud which will enable members to track an avatar and find out where abouts on SL they are?
I know there are avatar trackers which can show who is on line even if this person is not on the friends list and now I wonder if there are other more "advanced" methods of actually tracing someone and knowing which location they are in. Also, is there any way of "finding out" if someone has an alt and discovering the name of that alt ?
I am asking because for the past few months I have been having problems, almost to a point of being stalked. I do not want to go into details about this but briefly .... The same person (not always the same avatar) seems to "know" where I am even though the option of "friends can find you on the map" is unchecked on my friends list and this person is definitely NOT on my list.

No and No Im sure someone could figure out an alt if they knew where they lived. With a little investigative work you could find someone if they have a certain typing mannerism etc and hang out at the same place all the time..... As far as gadgets that can give you this information, there is none..

There's no magic. But...
If you're wearing a scripted attachment where you don't have absolute knowledge of what's in the scripts and where they came from, those scripts can very easily reveal their whereabouts.
If you IM an individual or a group that includes that individual, your location is revealed to someone using certain third party viewers.
If you show up at a place where they have sensors installed, they can detect your presence.
Discovering alts: There's another current thread somewhere about the pros and cons of determining alts from matching IP addresses, which information is exposed to servers of parcel audio and media streams. Simply put, it's far from "beyond a reasonable doubt" because quite unrelated folks can end up assigned identical IP addresses under various conditions, but it gives some evidence. Of course to get even that information, one would need access to logs on those stream servers, and some in-world information about which avatars are present on the parcel at what times.

There is a better way.
Befriend an avatar, then let him/her add the option to let you find them on the map. done.
But you want to stalk people without them knowing it. So no. there is probably such a device. But I don't encourage people to hack their way into tracking someone who might not WANT to be tracked by you for a reason.
So, why do you want to track someone, but don't want to ask them?

Hi Kasuga
I dont want to track anyone and have no intentions of doing so. I am the one who is being "stalked" and that was why I wondered if such tracking devices existed ..... if so, this would explain how "someone" seems to know where I am on SL.

So, why do you want to track someone, but don't want to ask them? I think you misinterpreted the OP; she seems to me to be asking whether it's possible that someone is using such tricks to track her, against her will - not asking how she can do it herself.

Regarding finding out if you have an alt, and if so, what the alt's name is...
I could put a device telling me who's around in a location where only you would be likely to go (say your home) and hope you don't find it and return it. That could give me some info I could use to assume that a specific avatar is an alt of yours. But it's still only an assumption, not proof. There is no way to come up with absolutely concrete proof that any avatar is your alt.
About tracking your whereabouts when I do know who you are, without your consent:
There's only one way to do that. Give you a prim object to wear, that is scripted to tell me where you are at consistent intervals (and always after you teleport somewhere) and 1) hope you actually wear it all the time, and 2) hope you are in a script-enabled location so that the scripts can do their thing.

I'm wondering if maybe your "stalker" just has a lot of free time on his/her hands and is constantly checking for you in familiar locations. Have you tried changing where you hang out for a week or so? Don't go to your "usual" locations and see if you're still being followed by suspicious folks. If so, then it sounds like you might have some sort of scripted device on you like the others above suggest, or possibly someone who is a "friend" who can see you on the map has betrayed you and is telling this stalker where you are.
