Move a skybox

I want to move my skybox to a different altitude. Is there a trick to moving everything at once, or do I have to pack up all my stuff, move the box, and then put everything back in again? I'm thinking of raising the height by several hundred meters.

off the top of my head there are a couple of ways you can do it..
you could highlight everything and just type in theposition z axis how high you want it to go or you can add a couple hundred meters to each item in the position z axis and they'll fly up there..

that should work..

Edit :scratch that first part i forgot you can't do all those at one time unless they were in the same linkset :o

You could just highlight everything and slide it all up in the editor, probably in multiple steps. But that highlighting everything bit is tricky because small things (like poseballs, for example) too far away to be rezzed just won't get selected. It may help to be in the middle of the skybox when making the selection, and being careful not to exit the editor between steps of sliding everything or it'll be necessary to select everything again.

(ETA: One help in drag-selecting everything and knowing you got everything is the object and prim count shown in the editor General tab--assuming you know how many objects are involved. If everything on the parcel is moving, the counts in About Land / Objects may be useful for comparison.)

Or...

You could highlight everything, take it all into your inv as a coallesced object, put a prim up where you want it all, and rez the coallesced object onto it.

That could go wrong, though. If the skybox and contents fill the parcel's area, and the coallesced object's 'root' isn't in the centre of it all, you could wind up with some objects being auto-returned to you from your neighbours' parcels.

I've done this a few times.

Link everything that can be linked without messing with it - anything which is a 1 prim object.

Edit that linked item and write down the number it has at Z.

Edit the main building and write down it's Z number.

Change the Z number of the main building to a new value. Write down the difference between the old and the new.

Edit the linked object and add the above difference to it's Z.

Now do the same with any remaining objects.

It takes a little time, but its not really all that painful.

Presently I use a rezbox, so I can just click derez, move that box, and click rez.
- only items that were no-copy/no-mod have to be moved by hand. Which is one reason I rarely by from merchants who make objects with those perms.

it's a skybox i doubt there is that much in there..if you are moving up 300 meters just add 300 meters to the position z axis of each item and everything will be in the same place as it is now when you get up there..then move the skybox up last..

Then before you fly up type ctrl alt T and anything left should show up even if it's clear.. ;)

Why would a skybox have less in it?

Look at my sig - the screenshot on the left. Lots of things in there.

My home skybox isn't in those pics (it sort of is - I use the same building design for shop and home), but its even more full of toys.

saying it was a skybox and there couldn't be that much in it meaning even if there were 100 items in there i could have it moved pretty fast changing a digit or 3 in the z axis..

mine was 4 story it was much easier to just change the z axis and have everything in it's place when i got up there rather than trying to link everything and unlink when i got up there..

unlinking couches and beds and other other projects that were in mid design was a pain in the butt compared to just sending it up..cause it's all separated once you unlink it no matter if it was a separate linked set in the first place..once you link them they don't unlink back to what they were..

plus it's just simpler for people that may not know much about building or linking and such..

i don't want them coming back at me and bitching me out cause something fell apart on the unlink and they link up the wrong root prim and their bed or bar doesn't work anymore lol ;)

I've moved some fairly high prim count builds a short way using this method.
No linking, no taking required. Just take your time (and don't blame me if it goes horribly wrong!)

Fly a little away and up from the build
Ensure your draw distance is set high, it is what limits your ability to s3lect and to move distant objects. Up in the sky 256 is OK 512 is better. Use the advanced menu to disable cam constraints.
Make sure you can see everything clearly from your cam position, move the camera if necessary so you don't get in the way.
Right click any object and s3lect edit
Now use the mouse to click above and left of the build as it shows in the window, hold and drag the mouse to the bottom right of the build to describe a box that encompasses the entire build.
Everything should highlight in white. Give it time, it can take a while if there are a lot of objects.
Everything should be highlighted and show the edit axes.
Grab the Z arrow and drag up - slowly.

Be patient but positive.
Repeat as necessary.

Might pay to practice a bit first just to get the hang of the technique. Throw a bunch of objects out and try s3lecting and moving them.

Just DON'T HIT DELETE!

PS - The '3's in s3lect are because that is a BAD WORD in forum posting

(Edit: Typo - there are probably more)

Thanks all. Lots to think about, but Rime's method was the one I was hoping would work. It's way easier than checking perms or messing with linksets. Sounds like if I don't move too fast I'll be okay. Being naturally lazy, that won't be too hard.

I suggest moving the building itself first, then worrying about all the furniture and decor. Whether linking or select-dragging, it'll be easier to find all the little bits once the big bits aren't blocking your view anymore.

Well I figured I'd better check my suggestion again to make sure my old grey matter had not missed anything.

A couple of extra things to bear in mind:

Make sure none of the objects are locked.
Make sure you own all of the objects you want to move.
Sacrifice a Sion chicken to appease the prim gods

Set your draw distance to 512 m
If client lag is an issue temporarily lower other graphics settings
Activate the advanced menu Control+Alt+D
In the advanced menu check 'Disable camera constraints'
As a precaution, in the Tools menu check 'S3lect only my objects'

Your ability to s3lect and move objects is limited by the draw distance so with a draw distance of 512m fly away and up about 400m above the build then cam down so that the build is centered in the window with space at one side for the edit menu.

S3lect and edit any part of the build to get the edit window up (There is a shortcut to do this but I forget what it is and this works)
Left click above and left of the build and drag to below and right to s3lect all the objects.
They will be highlighted in white and objects hidden from view by others will be s3lected.
Let go the mouse and objects will remain selected with the edit axis shown.
If you know how many prims the build has check the number shown in the edit window.
If the skybox is the only thing then About Land, Objects will give you a prim count.

Left click and hold the Z axis edit arrow and drag the entire build up.
Re-position the camera if necessary and continue to move until you get the padlock icon meaning you have reached the edit limit.
Fly up above the build again and repeat until everything is where you want it.

Remember to fly onto and stand on your build to create a new landmark :)

Here's a quick demo video of me moving a 4096 sq m build platform and skyhome build that includes several no copy/no transfer items.

Note: In the video I think I incorrectly state that repositioning the camera will allow you to move further than the edit limit. Now I think you do have to reposition your avatar.
