Are there in game chat channels that I am missing? Is there a place where newbies can ask questions live? I have joined a group called "Newbie" and it has a few thousand members but no one talks. I feel that sending a mass IM to the group is kind of spammy. Is the newbie group supposed to be used that way? Sorry if this is not the SL way but I'm used to other online games that have "region" or "world" chats.

Hello Phrankie

I'm not in-world at the moment so I don't know about the group you mentioned, but you certainly can use group IM for queries (although check first to make sure it's not just an announcement group). In most cases if people just want to chat they don't do it by group IM but go somewhere where they'll find likeminded individuals. If you're looking for other newbies specifically, The Shelter in Isabel is a very good place. As its name suggests, it is a place where you can feel comfortable: you won't find griefers there. There are older citizens on hand as well to answer queries. You can dance, chat, and pick up freebie clothes and other essentials. The other place I would suggest is NCI (New Citizens Inc) Plaza - again as I'm not in-world I can't give you a location, but you should find it in search.

I've never played any other games, but from all I've heard, there is nothing quite like SL.
