On a class 5, I have mine set at 80. I think it goes to 100 though.

Most people keep them set low to help reduce lag.

Ah so it is adjustable on the Island sims... how about mainland? Has SL set a max number for mainland?

A region divided into 512 plots could possibly have 128 Avatars on the sim at once.

Limit is 40 on the mainland, and can't be changed by mere Players, even if you own all the parcels in that sim.

On a class 5 private sim you can push it from 40 to maybe 80, but you can expect it to be lag hell at or above 80. 100 is the max possible setting.

On any sim that isn't on a class 5 server, increasing the limit beyond 40 is asking to get lagged to death.

Also, Mainland sims have more neighboring sims than most Estate sims, and a sim is affected by the presence of an avatar in a neighboring sim. So the 40 limit on Mainland is likely to stay around for a while, unless Havoc 4 and Mono are accompanied by some major improvements in communications performance (at least).

I purchased mainland a few weeks ago and the traffic for yesterday was 22. I know this isn't all at once but 22 people on the sim is half the load.

Why would some one put out 50 camping chairs hoping to drive traffic? When all you are accomplishing is causing lag. IMHO

Traffic isn't the number of people who came by - it's some mystical formula that accounts for the number of people, how much time they spent on the land, phase of the moon and what Philip had for breakfast.

I saw a somewhat popular clothing designer do this recenlty. Tons of campers and no one shopping. The place was so laggy you took two steps and the lag monster would grab you and throw you out to sea.

I saw the concurrent population on an island hit 101 a couple weeks ago. It was laggy as hell, but it didn't crash. Not quite.

I've seen it documented several times that the new Havok 4-enabled sims are managing to get 100 avatars in without crashing.

Crap Mariner talked about it in a blog posting, and I thought it was interesting that there was some question about people starting to fall through the floor when there were nearly 100 in the sim...

all private owned sims can have additional avatars above 100 if the avatars last location was the same sim whe logging in.
ive seen it go as high as 105.
im not sure about this on mainland sims though as i dont often run into mainland sims that are full.

How many Avatars can inhabit a sim at one time?

I have heard the number 40 thrown about. Is that the max?

That's pretty much correct for Linden Lab mainland sims, though occasionally some will go as high as 43-45, but not dependably so.

Class V island sims max out at 100 (plus a bit of change). Interestingly enough, you can fit all 100 on a single OpenSpace sim running on a class V server, too.

never made sense to me either. any avi that the traffic brings in will soon leave coz of the lag.

I had a live concert at my sim recently, and we managed to get 70 something in, of course, I couldnt move. My landlord, Radjin Jimador was working his buns off making sure it didnt crash! Honestly, once you get this many ppl in, its impossible to move!

Traffic is a measure of minutes spent on the sim in the last 24-hour traffic polling period by residents other than the land owner.

Camping = more traffic. More traffic = significantly higher listings in old search, marginally higher listings in new search.

Traffic is a game in itself. Some people game traffic just to game it. They're numbers-obsessed. A lot of campers are like that too. Even though they're literally only making pennies at a time, they're obsessed with finding the most efficient ways to camp. *shrug*

I believe I've seen there are 50 people quite frequently in sims such as Help Island Public.

Yeah, class 5 mainland is significantly more taxed by the surrounding sims than private class 5's. It gets choppy at one of my mainland lots when there's 25 - 30 people at the neighbors bdsm club. More than that and I just leave... is like being at Sanctuary Rock lol.

No, it couldn't.

Wilde's explanation is correct; let me explain in a little more detail.

If you log in and spend five minutes on your land, and no one else is there that day, the next day's traffic figure will be 5.

If you and your partner log in and spend an hour there, the next day's traffic figure will show 120. (2 x 60)

If 10 people are on your land for 45 minutes each, your traffic will be 450.

Hope this helps.

There are indeed some Linden-owned mainland sims with higher avatar limits. During the great influx of users in mid-2006 I visited a welcome area sim with nearly 80 people in it. It was bad. Real bad.

I can remember when 30 avs would grind a sim to a crawl. I guess the Lindens have made a little progress in 5 years when it comes to crowds.

Maxed out my sim tonight with a live music performance from Luigi Volare. Didn't crash at all... but then, the sim is mostly residential, and not very laggy as a general rule. Class 5.
