LL is going to try to put forth a new version of SL this Wednesday, so if you haven't tried the latest First Look client, this would be a good time to try.
-------------- Note: I based this post on a Linden comment I saw; shortly after making this post a different Linden comment appeared to contradict the one that inspired this post.

Heh that's funny and contradictory isn't it? The blog post about the Wednesday downtime specifically says no new viewer will be released or required: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/16/downtime-for-maintenance/Then the very next post says that a new viewer will be released next week that incorporates First Look: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/16/first-look-viewer-to-be-released-next-week-update-113358100-now-available/So which is it? Do we need to download a new viewer next week, or not? If we do need to, is it on Wednesday during the update? -Atashi

Maybe it is an optional update?

Well, that is confusing. Just when I update my First Look viewer (all i've been using lately) they put out another one, lol. So....does this mean the update (1.13.3.58100) is the last beta of First Look and another will be released next week as the final version? Downtime is scheduled on Wednesday and only for 2 hours. Does this mean no more regular viewer? As far as I know each update to the First Look viewer is optional. I have used First Look viewers that were 3 or 4 version behind with no problem.

Or..............the First Look viewer just might be what we've been getting as the semi weekly viewer (required) and after all the bugs are worked out it's put out as the regular viewer. I mean LL states very clearly that First Look is "beta". I sort of like the idea if that is the case......it's more or less tested on the regular grid by normal everyday people before being released as the "official" viewer. And I can see where they are sort of hiding that logic. No one goes the the test grid.............it's just not Second Life over there. Subtle but welcome change in updating this game.

Love the First Look viewer, and using it on the main grid. I hate the LOD problems it has, and some of the random crashes, but love the viewer I hate the beta grid, and you would have to pay me to use it, because it is that painful...

You may be confused by the different terms being used, but the news isn't contradictory.
Upgrades to the GRID are not the same as an updated VIEWER. So the new viewer will be available for download this Wednesday, but there will not be any changes to the grid, just maintenance.
The difference is that the viwer is a client side change: that is, it is on YOUR computer (you're the client). You could refrain from updating your viewer and still continue to use the old on when in SL. The viewer is like a browser, which means theorectically there could be dozens of different versions of a viewer.
Updates to SL itself are server side, to the code of the game itself. That would be the equivalent of changes to a web site (as opposed to the browser you use to view the web site). You can't enter SL with old code, so you MUST upgrade when SL has been changed.
Hope that clears the confusion.
