How would you 1365 spambot emails from SL to crash your computer?

I think we will have to uncheck the IM to emails box.
When I turned on my computer this afternoon, I found 1365 emails trying to download they were all similar to below, looking like they came from 1365 different sims, with about 8-12 posts per sim. The bot did this for 3 hours straight, Sometimes managing to pass through 25 sims in a minute that's near a TP every 2 seconds, anyway somewhere through the download, it actually shut my computer down, not even SL has been able to pull that one off, it took me 4 reboots to download all this crap.

This turkey no longer exists in search by the looks so not sure if someone else fell victim to this and AR'd them as well.

No wonder the grid is grinding to a halt with this sort of crap going on, and the cool thing is it's completely free to make a new account and do the same thing again, much to the detriment of genuine free accounts.

I'm only a small business owner, this griefing caps all your IM's of course too and just obstructs normal business running.

This is just crap how LL are letting bots take over our world.

The bad news is that one doesn't even need a bot to do this.

The good news is that LL can stop it cold by banning the IP address range of the email sender(s) that pushed the spam into the in-world objects, confiscating all SL assets of the owner of those objects, and then prosecuting them for theft of service. It's very simple, and other service providers do it all the time. LL just has to protect its service with half as much vigor as it proposes to protect its brand.

Why u had to download em? A filter applied to the email would delete them all in seconds with no downloading (server side).

Google doesn't offer much for "JKU Commlink"
There's an indication that JLU stands for Justice League Unlimited

I downloaded them for evidence.
Yeah I found the script there too in google. I forwarded all this to Cosmo Linden after talking about it on live chat. I couldn't mut the object because it was during the day when I was doing a RL quest called "work" :)

Thanks for posting this Tegg - I've not been hit by this one, but I have had a previous IM spamming attack. I stoped that one by muteing the object by name.

I wonder if the emails from objects in SL could have a "Mute this object" link included in the email. Link some junk email has an unsubscribe list.

I turned off my email IM filter ages ago......It was annoying to me after a while....when I log in, that's when I deal with SL.... not IRL.

Something like that would have sent me through the roof, and probably sent my computer flying out the window resulting in my having to explain to my fiance why the awesome gaming puter he got me is in pieces on the lawn......whence I would then have to admit it was a spambot from SL......where in he would rant about SL and demand I seek help and get the EF off the computer..... oh yeah, it's on the lawn in pieces anyway, problem solved.

ok, so I made my coffee a little strong this morning.....

I turned off IMs to email too. I just end up reading most when I log in anyways. The Lindens need to nip that one in the bud or else this will spread.

Maybe they should limit it the way they limit incoming box contents - when it hits a certain amount within a certain time frame, stop.

I think these turkeys get around the normal 20 IM limit by teleporting to another sim to send, hence I actually got maybe 4000 IM's but they were condensed in to messages from each of the 1365 sims, 24 emails was the most I got from any sim too but in quite a few cases.

Incoming inworld IMs get capped, but IMs sent to email do not get capped. In my experience anyway. I routinely get capped but get all my IMs sent to me in email. I believe that limit only applies to your inworld presence, how many messages it will store to show you upon logging in.

Didn't see this post for a long while..

It ordinarily would, but the commlinks used by the Justice League Unlimited in Second Life are completely incapable of communicating with anyone who's not actually in that group.

turning off the IM's is fine, but what about when you get a message as..

[6:12] Grid Product : New Shirt at my funky mother island!

Filling up the whole screen, would turning off the IM"s work to stop that? No!
