If you install the new version but want to keep the old version installed and usable , is there anything special to do beyond installing to ad ifferent folder in the program files folder and a different folder in the start menu ?

The most recently installed on would be the one that an uninstall affects.

Would there be any conflicts with settings files?

Well I haven't done it myself but I have installed the first look viewer and that works in the way you're describing, it installs to a different folder and has a different Start Menu icon, so logically I don't see a problem with getting this to work.

The first look viewer, and the beta grid viewer, are designed to go into separate folders and exist peacefully with an installation of the normal mainline SL viewer.

I believe the new voiced version is designed to install into the same directory as the previous version and to replace the previous version , not to co-exist with the previous version.

I believe that is correct if you download from the log in page. But if you download from the website, you get to choose where you would like the install to go and there for have two installs. For example, I installed separately the latest client and yesterday, after i tired of a couple of crashes with it, I relogged using the older client.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter if you install these viewers to different directories, they will share the same settings.xml file.

It's located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings

The beta grid viewer uses the settings_beta.xml file, which is why it co-exists so well with the official viewer.

I think SuezanneC's is right to be concerned about potential conflicts between the settings of these two viewers because some settings-related problems have cropped up with the new viewer. For example, I was ruthed for two hours last week and no amount of trickery I normally use to 'de-ruth' would work. The grid wasn't that lagged, nobody else I met was similarly blighted, and only when I deleted the Second Life settings folder did the problem rectify itself. This problem turned up elsewhere on the forums, and I assume was rectified the same way. The deletion of the settings folder also appears to stop the updated viewer trying to update itself again - another problem that's appeared since the update.

I suppose it's possible some settings from the old viewer have been removed, causing the new viewer to choke when it comes across them in the settings.xml file. If that's the case, then I doubt these two particular viewers will live happily side by side for very long.

My post was assuming that SueznneC was referring to the two installs of the current client for the main grid that are available now... the one last official client without voice (1.18.0.6 I believe) and the newer ''optional'' one that includes voice (1.18.1.2). I have done this in past when a new main grid client came out that is optional and have had no probs switiching tween both as needed until the newer one becomes mandatory.

I have both the current voice-enabled cleint and the previous non-voice client installed on my Mac, and so far, even when running multiple accounts, I have seen no problems from doing that setup. I did note that the larger window size that I opted for in the Voice Client stayed with me when I reverted to the non-voice client. So I agree that the settings are shared between the two.
