Ok, maybe I'm missing something silly, but...

I'm in my first week, and I went ahead and rented a residence for 4 weeks (I know it probably makes sense to buy land, but I'm still kind of exploring and getting to know the world and just wanted a home base).

My question is, I can't seem to figure out how to put furniture in the room (just have the freebie furniture items right now), and I can't drop anything. Am I unable to drop items in a rental place?

You might have to join a group owned by the landlord that has build permissions on that land. If you are already a member, you may just need to activate that group tag. Right click on yourself, select groups and find that group on the list. Highlight it and choose activate.

If that doesn't work IM your landlord.

Welcome to your new home! :D

So my new problem is that I can't seem to find how to join the group, I guess I was assuming I'd get an invite automatically when I rented.

Did you click on a rental box to pay? Usually they give you a notecard with that kind of info on it. Try left-clicking on the box, and see if you get a notecard. (Or check your notecards in inventory, and see if you got one already and didn't realize it).

I did indeed, and the notecard gives some brief rules explainations and since I should wear my group tag when on the property (but no group invite that I can see on there). I Im'd the landlord, so hopefully he can clear things up. I really appreciate your advice!

Unfortunately there is no way a rental box can automatically send you an invite to join a group. That will have to be done by the landlord (or one of his officers) manually.

If you happen to know the group name ("about land" tab might give you this) there is a groups search facility from the menu bar...which tab escapes me at the moment.......

Find the group and join...unless the owner has stipulated a "request to join" is required.

Good luck.
