Harassment - what to do?

My girlfriend and a couple of her female friends hang out / work in a busy place in sl. There's a certain guy who frequents place on his many alts constantly harassing them and other women there. Almost every known alt of his gets banned from the place, yet he continues to make new alts and sexually harass the girls whether in open chat or IM. What should we do about this guy? Can Linden permanently ban him some how (which would be great)?

How do you know it's the same guy?

He probably picks the same last name every time. Most griefers aren't too bright.

Everyone harassed needs to keep detailed notes on the harassment and keep making detailed Abuse Reports. From what I have been reading, while Linden Labs has a bad history of responding to individual Abuse Reports, they are better at responding when getting complaints from different people about the same person on the same behavior.

The details should include specifically why they think the different avatars are from the same person. Same M.O., same times online, never premium accounts, same grammatical mistakes, same favorite phrases, etc.

Pending Linden action, most harassers go away when everyone ignores them. Fighting and complaining makes harassers happy. No response whatsoever to their harassment depresses them.

Since it seems to be verbal not physical (i.e. graphics on screen) harrassment you describe, the mute button seems called for. Or, you might try talking to a Linden Liaison that's on-line while he's doing this and see if you can get his "visits" shortened. A post in another thread about griefers reported pretty good luck with that.

Somehow, the perpetrator still gets attention by showing up.

Simply ignore. Carry on with whatever you were doing. No reaction = no griefer, faster than anything.

Of the suggestions posted, this is the correct one.

Something that really helps a LOT is to cooperate and pool your abuse report ID numbers - these numbers can be used by Lindens to cross-reference the abuse reports and work out a pattern to the attacks. Most specifically, they can look at the IP address for each alt and see if they're all coming from the same place. If they are, then it's somebody who's creating new alts specifically to evade punishment for doing something he knows is wrong, and they're very likely to permaban him after that.

I prefer Desmond's approach. Filing abuse reports, particularly detailed reports, is a total pain in the booty. I simply refuse to allow somebody to have this kind of control over me and my time. I have far better things to do than to allow some teenager with a 6 foot penis attachment to ruin my day.

In Second Life, whatever the form of abuse, it tends to be pretty ineffectual unless you decide to allow it to bother you. Mute, ignore, or simply TP out of that location. There will be a day, not to far in the future, when Linden Lab won't even respond to abuse reports any more. The grid is growing to fast.

As somebody who has received their fair share of griefing and stalking, I can tell you this is the only solution that works every time - without causing you a lot of effort and frustration.

Personally, I prefer to use an alt myself when this happens. Only I don't log out and log in as the alt. I put on the folder that says "FAT UGLY OLD FEMALE" which has a purchased skin and outfit, a white prim behive hairdo, prim wrinkles on the scaly legs that flap when she moves. Then I go right up to them and say, let's get it on baby.

Not for lack of trying, but she hasn't been sex-genned yet.

Considering the desperation of some men whom I've met online, I find that last sentence difficult to believe.

This wont be a popular response -

But Your GF and her freinds should hang out somewhere different for a few weeks and not add that place to their "picks"

The harasser will give up when hes not getting the response he wanted.

The only alternative is to continue with reporting him. Well document the things he does and says so the Lindens will be able to figure out its the same person.

I think I've just found a new answer to most of my problems. Now, anyone know how to resurrect an alt from pre-manic-password-change times? :D

Well, send me an IM in game and I'll be happy to show you. She's not a pretty sight. With the wrinkles and scaly legs, you'd think she'd prefer floor length skirts. Nope, she likes the minis.

:)

*votes for this approach as well*

Griefers do what they do because it's the attention and reaction they're after. Quietly find someone who can Eject & Ban, and meanwhile IM the people that do respond and politely ask that they simply ignore whatever he/it does.

Do keep up the Abuse Reports, but the silent, uncaring treatment is going to have a far better and quicker response and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that it'll endlessly annoy him that his behaviour isn't having the desired effect.

Since it sounds like it's been happening for a few days or a while now, you should expect an escalation in his behaviour before he'll finally give up, just don't rise to the bait.

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.
