I went to a free in-world class and made my first in-world animation, yay! Only two frames, a sitting animation, but no one else in the world can do this specific one but me ^_^
This is exciting for me, as I have been modding for Elder Scrolls games for a number of years, even as far as making a custom standalone world/game (morrowind4kids.com) -- yet I had always felt extremely intimidated by doing custom modelling and if you had even *mentioned* custom animations, I would have simply laughed and shook my head. Nope, I can't learn those. Nope, too hard for me. In 3-4 years of modding outside SL, probably over a thousand hours on various types of projects, I hit a wall where it just seemed too durn HARD to learn certain new skills and concepts. Something about having my avatar learn them in a guided SL classroom, suddenly made something click, a little lightbulb turn on. Yes, I've seen webpage tutorials, Flash tutorials, YouTube tutorials -- for some reason, they just all seemed too difficult to learn 3D animations and modelling.
I'm excited because even if for some reason I don't continue with SL, if I decide to go back to some past hobbies and entertainments, I'll now have access to learning some things I didn't seem to be able to access before. The "hooks" are there now, to make some concepts stick.
But the most exciting thing, is learning how much I can learn. Things I never thought before that I could. (I have nine years of college, and build computers as a hobby, but learning is still not always an easy thing. Whenever anyone says "oh its easy, if I can do it anyone can," my doubt meter locks in, hard.)
Its kind of exciting and makes me wonder what other educational opportunities SL will eventually open up for me. It makes me wonder, WHY having an avatar in a 3D world, makes it different in any way.
My apologies to the rest of the forum, this one little thing just ... made my day ^_^
I felt ... empowered.

Brash, you're in good company. One of SL's best clothing and skin designers, Zoe Llewelyn, designed Morrowind mods before discovering Second Life.

I think a good many of the Morrowind modding community would have an absolute field day here ^_^ Many of us are semi-addicted to the construction set editor to the point we no longer even play the game itself, we just love "making things". SL is like "living inside" the construction set itself, and I think it would have a great appeal to a lot of them. I'll have to go look up Zoe Llewelyn, there's good odds I may even know her by her Morrowind nick... or at least know of her. edit: Yup, she is "Sheikizza" in Morrowind where she made many fabulous armor sets. She's a good deal more famous than me there, heh (mostly because she is umpteen times more talented..) This is her Morrowind site: http://www.sheikizza.boneflower.com/

I'm glad you like taking classes in SL. I have had the same experience.
I started taking classes and now I teach in SL (just building skills). If anyone wants to share what they know and become an instructor too (yes you get paid but its hard work), IM me inworld.
