Like in RL, begin by meeting strangers and saying Hi.... that works as the first step.

Make friends. Bring friends into SL. Keep track of them. Work with them. It's all about community. I brought a RL friend in a couple of months back .. and she's teaching me things!

This is -great- advice. Bring your friends into Second Life, and explore and learn together. You won't have that feeling of being alone, and your network of new friends will expand exponentially, as will your knowledge.
