Although I can type several other epithets, I can't type 'hell' (done without quote marks) and have it appear. I'll type it, but it doesn't show up, not within a sentence or alone. It's just a blank beside my in-world name, or a space in the sentence in the Chat line. I have to type it with dashes or spaces to have it appear. Just about any other naughty English word shows up, but not hell.
Anyone else have that experience? Is this a well known, apocryphal thing, or just me?
I'm using a Mac, could be an issue?
I searched the forums, don't see this.

I might be wrong about this, but isn't it possible to have a gesture which does this ... essentially reacts to the word in your chat, and if it does not repeat it back into your chat, it seems to be hidden? Maybe I am losing my mind ... I am at work and cannot verify this.

That's possible. I have some gestures that do that.

I have a Mac (God bless it) and I just typed hell in world and it showed up. Check your Mac and SL for any stray "PG" restriction you have floating around. Prudery sucks!

If it's playing when I type 'hell', then shouldn't someone (or I) hear it?. It doesn't play when I type 'hell'. Gonna delete it, see what happens. Thanks! -Vic Going to hell in a handbasket

-Vic Going to hell in a handbasket Something I just noticed this morning is a bunch of gestures I never activated WERE activated, and two gestures that I use all the time got de-activated. This is the second time this has happened to me. It's probably your problem. Watch the chat line closely when you're typing hell. If it starts auto-completing to some unexpected text, it's a gesture. (Also try searching your inventory for hell...)

Marge: So, what did you children learn about today? Bart: Hell. Homer: Bart! Bart: But that's what we learned about. I sure as HELL can't tell you we learned about HELL unless I say HELL, can't I? Homer: Well, the lad has a point. Bart: Hell, yes! Marge: Bart! Bart: [singing] Hell, Hell, Hell, Hell, ... Marge: Bart, you're no longer in Sunday School. Don't swear.

Never had that problem, I'm not familiar with Macs, does it's OS have some form of Parental controls? Maybe that word was selected for "Bleeping"? That's all I can think of.

If you do Control G to bring up the gesture editor, click on the trigger colum to sort by trigger phrase, and look through the trigger phrases for "hell", you will probably find the trigger "hell", if so, highlight it and select edit, and it will probably not have any replacement text.
If this is the case you can edit the gesture to suit you or leave it as is but deactivate it or delete it entirely.
If that's not the case then you have a "" of a problem.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what's up but I'm on a Mac and type hell all the time in SL, heehee It's not a parental control issue, because although OS X 10.4 and above does have these, they can't be activated for the main (admin) account. Hell, I chalk it up to a weird SL client glitch. Clear your cache and relog...may not help, but what the hell.....

It obviously sounds like a gesture that is triggering when you type in the word. Being a gesture maker i would know. Try opening your gesture window and looking for anything that is triggered by that word.

I'd created the gesture to play a sound byte, but it wasn't working, so it didn't occur to me that was happening. Thanks to all for the helpful input.
