Had a problem just now in-world, with one of my alts. I wanted to edit part of my furry avatar. It's an operation I have done successfully several times before, on my other accounts. Merely doing an "edit linked parts" to de-link and delete some of the prims, so the fuzz is only on the front of the neck. This allows me to wear prim hair and have it look right. The part in question is Copy OK/Mod OK/NO Transfer. The meter for packet loss isn'r registering any problems.
So... I edit the neck ruff, re-name it, and take it back into inventory. Only it's not there.
I try again. Made sure the edited part was named what I thought it was, and did a take copy this time. Nothing in inventory. Did a Take, and it vanished into a black hole, never to be seen again.
Logged off, cleared cache, logged back on. Nothing...
Tried twice more, with the same results.
Tried again, and this time did a right click on that part that I had just edited, and selected "Wear". OK, that attached it to me, in the new, modified form. But it still does not show in inventory. I detached it, and it vanished again...
Logged off and back on yet again, clearing cahche. Still not there.
I check the trash, and none of the prims that I deleted from the various editing attempts are there either!
WTF?
Just before all this started, I was able to buy stuff and received it with no problems. Had no teleport problems or other issues. I can wear or remove stuff that is already in inventory just fine...
But I can't mod an item and take it back into inventory?
*Sigh* Oh well, lunch break's over. I'll look again this evening. I bug reported it, for what good that may do.

It could of defaulted to a name - 'object'. So look at anything thats called 'object' in your object folder.
A Tip - if you put something back in inventory - and you can't find it - sometime pressing the recent tab in the inventory window will show you were it is, but that 'poofs' after a relog or cache.

Nope. Goos suggestions, but not there, either. I also looked for anything named Object in my Lost and Found, Trash, and Objects folders. Nothing. I keep those free of unnamed items, for just that reason. I empty lost and found regularly, and empty trash regularly, and move stuff out of Objscts and into another "Hold and Sort" folder. I am hoping it will be there when I log on this evening, after several hours have passed.

I lost two houses this way by taking them to inventory.
It seems to be that you take them, the sim you're in crosses off something that says "this isn't my problem anymore", wiping their existence from its memory, and then the asset thinger never gets hit hard enough to wake up and realise "hello! inventory here!" so it just vanishes into nothing and you lose it. Permanently. Then a Linden comes along, checks 0,0,0 in the sim as if you hadn't already, scratches their head and leaves.

Ceera, really outside chance but have you tried typing 'object' or what you renamed it as into the inventory search string? I've only heard of this recently, 6 months and still a noob

I seem to have experienced this a few times over the past few weeks. I never risk it now, I always try taking a copy first, if that appears then in my inv then I 'take' the object or just delete it. But I never go straight for the' take' option without checking that the 'take copy' appears in my inv first.

Ceera, I've noticed recently that if I name/rename an object and take it back into my inventory, the new name doesn't always 'stick'. This always happens if I name/rename the object and take it into my inventory before toggling out of the 'general' tab. In which case it'll either have the old name or else 'object' if it had no name previously. If the unlinked prims (or at least the root prim of the linked, renamed & saved object) had been named by their original creator, then they might be lurking in your inventory under their old name.
Nowadays I'll always toggle to another tab or else close my editor before taking an object into my inventory.

Well, all the missing prims finally showed up in inventory when I logged back on with that alt last night, six hours later. Strangest part was that the edited neck ruff that I had managed to wear immediately after editing was attached to the avatar, even though I had detached it earlier. I guess the 'detach' never got through to the asset server either!
Even the trash items finally showed up. Got to love our stable, reliable asset servers... Yup.

The ones I lost sat (or appeared to) in my inventory for an hour, but they didn't exist when I tried to rez them back out. I have also literally had the clothes off my back removed from existence that I'd worn from inventory- first rebake after logging in later and they were gone. Nekkidness.
