This is a red dot, square when zoomed in on it, not a circle. What is the meaning of it? Items I own show up as blue, prims owned by someone esle are black. What is this red dot?

It's a beacon.. when you search on the main map or in search places, it's a pointer to the teleport spot of that location. You should also notice a red arrow in your viewer window, which points the the same spot. Clicking that arrow will get rid of it. If you're lucky, walking through the big red pillar in front of you will too.

If it's more pink/purple, then it's a group-owned object.

I vote for dotedote's explanation. It makes more sense.

Screenshot.

The beacon on my minimap is a moderatedly sized hollow circular outline - not what a person would describe as a dot.

The above is displayed in the Knowledgebase, along with the following explanation:

From: someone
CONE OF LIGHT - Comes from the yellow dot and shows which direction you're facing.

GREEN DOTS - Other Residents of Second Life. You may want to go over and say hello!
A round dot - A Resident at about the same height.
T - A Resident is above you in height. They may be flying, or in a very high building.
Upside-down T - A Resident is below you.

COMPASS - Helps you get oriented. North (N) is in a bluer shade than the other directions. If you spin around using the left and right arrows or A and D keys when the chat bar is closed, you will see the Mini-Map spin too.

If this makes you dizzy, you can change this setting by going to Edit menu > Preferences > General > uncheck "Rotate Mini-Map" and click OK.

GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES - Land will be colored accordingly. Grass is green, snow is white, and water is blue.

DARK GRAY BLOCKS - Objects owned by others. In a region with lots of buildings, you will see lots of dark gray blocks.

CYAN BLOCKS - Objects you own in the area. If you have land and own a house, they'll appear this way. If you build in a sandbox, you'll see this too. This can be useful for finding lost objects. For example, you may have accidentally jumped out of a plane, but you can tell where it's going by following the light blue.

FUCHSIA BLOCKS - Objects owned by a group you're in. For an object to be group-owned, it must be set to "Share with group" and then "Deed..." must be clicked.

REGIONS - Each is represented by a square. The region you are in will be lighter than adjacent ones. You can see this more clearly by resizing the Mini-Map. Click-and-drag on the little orange triangle in the lower-right corner of the Mini-Map, and watch it grow. Resize it to your liking.

If a region appears red, that probably means it's (Offline), which indicates there's a problem and you can't go there. If it stays red for awhile, like half an hour, you can use Help menu > Help Request to ask a Linden Liaison about it. We usually notice when regions are down and get to them sooner than this.

DARK GRAY AREAS - You can't go here, they're beyond the borders of the world.

CLICKING ON THE MINI-MAP - Brings up the big World Map, showing more details about where you are.

RIGHT-CLICKING ON THE MINI-MAP - Lets you change the zoom level and "Stop Tracking", which makes the red beacon and arrow pointing to a destination disappear.

I see no mention of red dots, therefore, there must not be any red dots.

I would like to issue an advisory; be wary of any organization that uses the color name "fuschia" in any documentation.

I think red dots are scripted prims.

The Arbor project orbs (scripts to try and stop 16m2 Parcel Splitters - see the InfoHub in-world or http://blacklist.npl.com/) show up as red dots on my mini map.

But since all scripts don't show up as red, possibly they are scripts to do with land rather than just general scripts?

Or... just thinking about it... they could be scripts that communicate with an external web server?

DoteDote is right - it's an object set to the group
