Draw distance changes?

After the last update, I've noticed that things I used to be able to see in the distance now only partly rez even though they're well within my draw distance.
When building and camming around to the other side of the build some prims just don't show up until I get almost right on top of them.

The best example of this for me is: rez a plywood box and start walking away from it, keeping the prim in sight. When you're 60-90m away from it, it'll suddenly just vanish. Walking back towards it, it won't reappear until you're under 30m away.

Resize it to 1.5x1.5 and it vanishes when about 120m away, and doesn't reappear until you're under 60m away.

Has it always been like that, because part of me feels like this is new behaviour?

Have you checked your Preferences? There is a draw distance setting in there, and it could have been reset.

I know a lot of my preferences got changed after the last update. Confused the heck out of me until I figured it out.

Hope this helps.

It's been this way for a long time (more than a year). Maybe they've tweaked it a little bit, but it is normal for small objects to disappear beyond a certain distance, even when they are within the draw distance.

The standard workaround is to link the smaller object with something larger.

Thankies :). The change probably is minor since I can't help shake the feeling that when I tp to the same places I did before, things don't look all the same.

Could it have to do with this?:

An easy guide to occlusion culling, new in 1.10

Quite possibly somethings been borked with culling since the last fabulous update.

From what I understand, occlusion culling doesn't affect whether something exists or not, just whether it's drawn or not. The sim still sends/should send everything within draw distance over and it's up to the viewer to decide whether it's occluded or not. The little prim doesn't reappear when you cam to where it's supposed to be, only if you walk close enough to it. But as someone said, that one's old behaviour apparantly :).

Still feels like less things are being rezzed in the distance (when camming to it, outside the normal camera constraints) than before the last (two) update(s) :o.

You can easily test if it is occlusion culling. From the "Client" menu (control-Alt-D if you don't have it), uncheck "Object-Object Occlusion" in the "Rendering" menu to turn off occlusion. Just to be clear this is Client>Rendering>Object-Object Occlusion.

You can use this to turn off occlusion culling and see how it affects what you see.
