I thought regions have unique names. But obviously not. The other day, the region "Toshima" was auctioned. But another "Toshima" already existed (a private island belonging to "Nerdy Diva Estates" . Have Linden Lab made a mistake? Or are region names in fact non-unique?

Perhaps other Estates can have TOSHIMA too because they are regions in a specific estate? Good Question.

Could they have been auctioning off a previously existing, but abandoned or seized, region?

Two "name spaces", one for mainland and one for estate?

Nope: The second Toshima is on the new "corsica" continent.
Maybe there are two "name spaces", one for mainland and one for estate.

Region names are used in SLurls to uniquely identify a location, so this is clearly a mistake. I just tried it in-world, and selecting either Toshima in the results list takes you to the one on the private estate. You can only teleport to the new Toshima by actually clicking the map where it is.
This needs to be fixed because it will screw up anyone trying to give landmarks to their property there.
