I have looked around the forums, but haven't seen a problem like mine so thought I would ask here in case anyone may know whats happening, and how to fix it.
I've been playing SL a little over a month now I think and everything has been fine until i loaded it up today.
I clicked on the SL icon on my desktop and the normal log in browser came up, all fine, HOWEVER I now have a second, Second life dialog box come up, this one looks like a DOS screen, black with lots of white commands, constantly updating itself.
It has lots of writing on it, and when i try to close this box, it also shuts down my SL log in browser.
Also when I go in world, when i try and click on another avatar, it highlights them as it would if it was my avatar and i wanted to change something about it.. it has never done this before, always gave me the normal, pm, profile etc options.
I havent modified or changed anything about SL and now this is coming up, could it be a bug and needs reporting? Is everyone now getting this second window come up??

The additional window , a command prompt window in today's jargon, which I still call a DOS box at times, is produced by doing Client / Console Window, which causes the command prompt to appear the next time you start SL.
Just do Client / Console Window again and restart SL and you should be fine.
The other problem I'm not familiar with at the moment.

Concerning your second questions, my avatar doesn't get highlighted when I click on it.
Can you show us a screen shot of what you mean?
Does this oddity happen everywhere or is it just in a particular place?

the other problem has now stopped also
