Just curious, but does anyone know what day SL came into being? I know there were phases, like beta testing and what not. I guess I mean the first day the grid came on at all, and the first avatar was created. Does anyone know? Also, do the Lindens have any special events on this day?

It should be coming up soon, but i don't know the exact date. All i know is i have a idea for a way to celebrate it. LL should re open Linden World for 1 day for us all to download and try out. (the original SL)

For some reason I've suddenly got a song by The Smiths stuck in my head ...

"I've come to wish you, an unhappy birth-day ... 'cause you're evil, and you lie ..."

According to the SL History Wiki...

http://www.slhistory.org/index.php/Main_Page

...it's June 23rd.

You can read about past birthday events on there as well.

It would be interesting to see this, but keep in mind that when that client was in use, SL was in closed beta, and only a handful of people were in world. There was also only a handful of sims on the grid. I'm not sure of the actual numbers of people vs sims since this was before my time. Anyway, my point here is that if the old client was re-released, LL would have to open a pretty huge temporary grid for the thousands of curious people using software that is most likely even more buggy than what we have now.

There are a few people here from 2002 but I have no idea how that happened since Second Life didn't open until 2003.

Wasn't there a closed beta form Dec 2002 to April 2003? I think then it went open beta. I think if my memory is correct, that from about Feb 2003 to April 2003, you had to sign up to get into the closed beta. You submit an e-mail, wait, and then you could sign up with an account. I could be completely wrong, I am just trying to pick my brain of what i remember form over 4 years ago now.

As for when the idea of SL came about, I think Philip started working on it some time in 1999.
