I'm trying to sneak around and not let others know I'm online. Yet in groups it shows when I'm online and the last time I logged in. Any way to prevent this other than staying offline?

Better yet, if one doesn't already exist for this issue, create a JIRA entry for it.

If you edit Preferences, on the communications tab there's an entry that reads "make my online status visible only to my friends."
I don't know exactly what this does, and my guess is that it won't do what you want. However, it's worth a try. |

It would be useless anyway because it's my friends I'm trying to avoid. ![]() _____________________

so there's no way around it then...? Well, I was only being partly facetious when I said to make an Alt - that would be a way around it - unless the Online Status thing Kidd suggested works (but I'm not convinced it will either). If what you are wanting is to play a different 'part' or 'role' in SL some of the time, then an Alt is probably the way to go. There are two problems with this of course, which you will read about on other recent threads on this forum... 1) People seem to be having difficulty *making* Alts just now - even 'legit' $9.95 ones 2) Your Alt will soon assume a 'life' of its own, with its own friends and even its own Group memberships, probably... and sometimes that Alt ends up becoming more of a main than your original 'Main' account... ![]() Oh - and your Alt will be penniless ![]() If this is what you decide to do, good luck with setting one up! _____________________

Groups can be set by the group owner to not make the member list public to those not in the group, however, anyone IN the group can still see status. So, if you want to hide your online status from others in the group, you are out of luck (short of leaving the group.) If you want to hide your status from those outside the group, ask the group owner to make the group member list private.

Thanks to you both for your suggestions. You are talking to the alt of the main in question, so I'm hip to the drill. Was just trying to get my main online and I see now that there's no way to do it without detection. _____________________

umm, not entirely sure of this but ..
if you follow Kidds idea with the 'set online status to only friends' .. and then going through your friends list which should be by default hiding your status, making sure status is off, that should work? |

It works as far as friends seeing that I am online or not in the main friends window, but if they check on my group members page, they can see if I am truly online and the last day I logged in. Hiding my status does not hide it here. I guess if I want my main avatar to appear offline, I should keep him offline. ![]() _____________________

IE....the checkbox should read: "'set online status to only friends.....oh, and to every single member of every single group to which you belong....with a record of when you were last on"
Just wait a few weeks, then the checkbox will be changed to: "set online status and share SSN with only friends and groups to which you belong" ![]() |
