I am pretty excited about the open-sourcing of the SL client. I have downloaded the code and will see if there are ways I can contribute. However, it is clear to me that I will not be a major contributor to advancements in the client. Still, I have lots of ideas. Here is one to start.
1. Option to "Render Only Current Parcel". This would be a toggle, that would tell the client to only download and render objects on the current parcel. In addition, the client would check the parcel description for a list of other parcels to be considered a part of the current parcel in the form [alsorender=parcela, parcelb, etc.]. For clients that do not support this option, there would be no impact.

1. 80's-based-technology only client.
Floppy disk seek boot sound on startup, with your choice of "APPLE ][" or Commodore 64 headers in an 8x6 font.
LIM/EMS would have to be configured as your avatar would first load in low memory, as would clothes, but attachments would not be able to be loaded until after HIMEM.SYS was resident and a LOADHIGH= command issued.
Shader options would include various effects under the "Money for Nothing" category in re: squiggly low-rez lines when dancing, glowing sketched headbands as well as a reduced poly count. "A-Ha" mode would replace all culled objects with rotoscoped graphite sketches which would reveal themselves depending on your camera angle.
Flying would be replaced by three options: Light cycles, KITT, or Airwolf. Flux capacitor available to vehicles 31 prims or less, because where you're going, you don't need roads. Stipend would be received at the I/O tower, granted by the MCP or WOPR, depending on your create date. All default avs would look like Desi Arnaz, Jr. and be accompanied by glowing blonde lad who can turn corners at a perfect 90 degree angle.
F1 Help replaced by video screens showing a stuttering animated head with a slowly rotating cube background, and Ahern is replaced by the Thunderdome.
All cube prims require "gleaming" before use. Particles renamed to "Bodi".
Each user is granted its own Bit, but it can only respond yes or no. I do however suggest heeding its advice, as once you log in, you will be on the game grid until you die playing.
Space travel is possible, but only if Jinx put you there. Respond in morse code to return.

Just how long have you been at that keyboard Michi? Is there a doctor about who can unstick Michi's fingers from the keyboard and reduce his caffeine level? I know extremely little about Open Source but I have a question; assuming lots of developers 'do their own thing' are we going to end up with a zillion verions of the client and if so, who's going to collate/distribute such? One rather confused hobbit.

From: bilbo99 Emu Just how I know extremely little about Open Source but I have a question; assuming lots of developers 'do their own thing' are we going to end up with a zillion verions of the client and if so, who's going to collate/distribute such? Yes and no. There may be "other clients", but there will be only one official client and that one will be distrubted as we are used until now. All changes to official client will be very firmly checked by Rob Linden (see the Blog) and his team before it even gets out to us. The use of "other clients", even when they offer most beautiful features, is risky and should not be done. Because in those clients things may be buildt in you don't want... as password-loggers and what no more. I had myself informed by someone who knows what she is talking about . Morwen.

Support for 3D helmets w/ directional axis control for the camera.
When you take control of your camera, you would pick an object a distance away and zoom in on it. But rather than be focused on the object, you could 'walk' your camera around to look at it and look around you with head movements.
It's really due, with a Metaverse like this. Though I won't be buying into it until it's $500 or less, though that's still a stretch...

Offline Inventory Sorter
01-11-2007 17:52
From what I can tell, your Inventory list is cached. (not the objects or textures, but the LIST of UUID, their descriptors, and folder hierarchy.) How about an Offline Inventory Sorter Interface? Redo your inventory offline, using folders, renaming things, etc. AND FINDING DUPLICATES Then a 'command' or 'button' or 'function' that logs you on and reconciles your SL online inventory to your newly organized one. I'D PAY $RL for one of these...
