I saw a great shiny varnished wood floor recently, and it actually reflected its surroundings!!!

Does anyone sell these or know how it's done?

Its not reflecting, its slightly transparent, and below is the same room build again (double the prims). Maybe this question should be asked in the builders forum...

Remember the movie Sphere? "It's reflecting everything but us."

Take another look at that "shiny" wood floor. You'll see it doesn't reflect avatars.

As Carola said, it's a trick with transparency. And yes, the room below is upside down. It's a cool trick, fools a lot of people.

You can also take a snapshot, download it onto your hard drive and play with the image in a graphics program (flip it, add a little transparency..etc) then you can upload the texture inworld and you can have close to the same effect without the additional prim usage.

It looks quite cool when done well.

hmm... but has anyone seen a script that shows the reflection of an avatar?

(mirrors would look better than a gray slab, then!)

There is no way to actually mirror and display what the prim might "see" as a reflection.

Mirrors

But... you can see a good emulation of a mirror (its a cheat) at Bravo Bravo, where they will sell one to you - I like it, but its all done with smoke and mirrors (well with camera locations and avatar moves really).

That is the trick where you have to "touch" the mirror, then the camera swirls around and you are looking fullscreen at yourself in the mirror.... trick is there is no mirror, you are looking at your avatar itself?

Yup. I have that gadget. I think it's called "Surprizing mirror" or some such. Sit on the chair in front of the vanity mirror, and you see yourself viewed through the mirror from behind. It also had a dozen or so animations, like brushing your hair.

But anyone else in the room sees nothing in the mirror. It's an illusion for one person only.

In short, the calculations are too intensive and the processing speed isn't fast enough to do real reflections in real time in SL.
