Hello all. How long must an account sit without any activity before it is removed, and/or no longer available in Search?

As I understand it a premium account that misses a payment will be suspended and then deleted after about a month. A basic account is never deleted no matter how long it goes unused.

I'm not aware that it *ever* happens. Is there reason to think it does?

(If a Premium account lapses in payment, it will be canceled--see my current sig. And it seems that the contribution to Search ranking of an account's Profile Picks degrades over time--two weeks, IIRC. But those are answers to different questions.)

I know of a basic account that where shut down because of under-age. Noone uses that account and it can't be logged into to delite it. But it still shows in 'Search people' with profile, picks and all...

Goodness, why on earth would they ever remove inactive accounts? That would decrease the amount of total "residents" by millions!

My best friend IRL tried SL and hated it hated it hated it and abandoned the account almost two years ago, yet still shows up in people search.

Qie - I've tested the profile picks with my Puppet Army alts, and if I don't log them in for 30 days, they no longer appear in the "all" search at all.

But to answer the larger question, my experience also has been that everybody shows up in people search forever, unless they either manually cancel the account or get removed by the Lindens.

From the Knowledge Base:

How long can my Second Life account remain inactive before it's deleted?
As long as you're in good standing with Linden Lab -- not delinquent with billing or otherwise in violation of the Community Standards and Terms of Service -- your Second Life account can remain inactive indefinitely. This means that your avatar and inventory will continue to be stored on our servers.

Generally, Basic accounts can be left alone if you're not going to log in for a long time, while Premium accounts need to be paid for accordingly, including tier fees for land holdings, or risk being put on hold and deleted.

Delinquency Policy
Linden Lab's delinquency policy is spelled out in various areas of the Terms of Service (ToS) and Knowledge Base. Links to the relevant ToS topics and Knowledge Base articles are below.

The delinquency policy is as follows:
If you owe a balance for more than seven continuous days, your primary and alt accounts will be placed in delinquency status. This status will enable you to access secondlife.com in order to clear the balance, but you will not be able to access your inworld accounts while delinquent.
We'll do our best to work with you to get the account clear, but we are no longer able to unlock accounts for the purpose of selling Linden™ dollars (L$) on the LindeX™ in order to clear an account delinquency.
We cannot allow alt accounts to continue to operate while another account is in delinquency. Alt accounts may be placed into administrative hold and you may be logged out of active sessions during this time.

I seem to be having trouble paying. What's going to happen to my account? Will I lose everything?
We attempt to bill your account for seven days from the first date of the billing failure (this is an automated process). If, at the end of that seven-day period, we're still unable to bill the balance due, we put your account on hold for an additional 30 days. During that 30-day timeframe, you can go to your account page and update your credit card information and manually push the charge through to immediately reactivate your account.

At any time, you can change your account status to Basic to keep it available to you at no charge. Please note that if you owned land, those charges are billed in arrears, so there may be one more payment due before fees cease to be incurred. All land owned and all land tier donations must be cleared to avoid additional fees.

38 days after a Premium account goes delinquent for non-payment of charges owed to Linden Lab, the Premium account is deleted, and all inventory is deleted, and all land forfeited to Governor Linden.

And yet I have disused land on two sides of my home. One has a random selection of objects placed by the owner when they bought it 18 months ago and I've never seen them there. The other was bought at auction nearly a year ago from after a previous absentee owner forfeited it to the Guv'nor. This piece of land is also disused - it's over 1024m and has only ever had a small structure like a bus shelter on it.

Both pieces of land were bought by people who were new to SL at the time and neither have any details on their profiles. I assume these people have been long gone from SL but they haven't checked their credit card bills so the subscription and tier get paid automatically.

interesting - i started sl in 2006, and left it for nearly 2 years b4 looking at it again.
I can't access that account now with the IP address, password and avi name known. Doesn't seem to exist anymore and it was a basic account too.

I recently stumbled on a password that I'd forgotten for an avi I made in 2003! I'm pleased to report that he's alive and well (looked pretty noobish though, needed quite a makeover).

Is it in people search?
