How do you decide where to place an island?

I am about to buy an island, and the only thing keeping me from it is my confusion over where to place it. Should I try to be as far away from other islands as possible so that I can expand at some future date if my current little ideas get bigger? For a fairly modest fee an island can be moved, so does that mean it's impossible to make a serious mistake anyway so just pop it out there in the void someplace and don't worry about it? Thanks for any help at all. The money is no small thing to me, and I'm trying to avoid silly mistakes.

Oh boy :) Ordered an island two days ago... Took me two hours to decide where to place it. I finaly decided to place it near a friends island, and to look for a nice number combination (now idea why, but most people like me seem to look for nice x and y numbers), and far enough from other sims.

Then when finaly found a place.... you have to think not only for a sim name, but also for an estate name! Another three hours to decide...

Oh and here can you browse existing sim names:

(I'm not sure if it is complete)

In general terms, my opinion is that you would want to be somewhat 'out in the empty space' so that you do have room to grow. You also don't want to park near someone else and upset their future plans for growth either. You cannot put your island next to an existing one that isn't yours, but building 1 space away pretty much means neither of you can use that in-between space, without mutual agreement from both.

Other than that, as Meni said, some people look for nice or lucky numbers for the global grid coordinates. I know I did :-) I also jumped onto the very far area they recently opened up to the west, so my island is a very long way from the mainland space. Although I have no plans for 'continent building' myself, one never knows what the future may hold and it would be good to have room to grow in the future, just in case.
