Hi, Are IMs stored anywhere? Can I make a record of them if I get the other person's permission?

While in-world using the Edit menu open your Preferences

Click the Communications tab

Check the Log Instant Messages checkbox

And you don't need the premission... you have all right to store the conversations. MSN, ICQ and many other IM-programs store chat-history too.

So it can be very nice and polite to ask.... but you don't need too. And, as far I have seen, you store all conversations or none. It is not that you can determine for who the history will be stored and for who not (at least what I have seen).

I store all chat-history... here in Second Life, but also in other chat-programs :P

you can keep and log any chat you there to receive (meaning your avatar is there). hence they chat log feature. You cannot transmit, sell, or give those logs to anyone however. (think with permission by the other avatars you can but I'd avoid that.)

Thanks for that. So I assuming there is no way of retrieving old IMs and that the 'system' doesn't record them?

I think there is no way to retrieve old IM's....

But I assume that all that happens in SL is logged, so if that is the case... IM's too.

I assume this because in many other online games (Ultima Online, Everquest and so on), this is the matter. It will be used in case of legal actions or to trace down griefers/exploiters that way.
But specially in a world as Second Life companies as Linden are bound to protect your privacy... (violating that would have a great impact on SL... not even to talk about the legal issues).

Thought the new "cat logging" logged IMs...if not you can make it save a history of IMS with people. I can't remember the options off hand but they are there in preferences. Not at home so can't fumble with interface.
