What's the purpose of this advanced feature? I was trying to hide a neighbor's ugly disco and thought that was the solution, but it only hides it if I click to edit it. So two questions: What's the point of HS? How do I make the disco disappear WITHOUT lowering my draw distance, putting up a wall, or moving? Wait, a third question: Does muting an object only make it quiet? Can it mute the visual too? (Okay, okay. Four questions.)

As a builder, it is a feature I find invaluable. I can use it to see if I failed to link any small or concealed parts into a linkset!
As I am building, I will occasionally stop and activate this feature, then start shift-clicking to selecting linksets and individual additional prims that I want to link together. I link them, then click on something else to start another assembly.
What a building is nearing completion, I'll do this again, to make sure I didn't forget to link anything. I'll select each intended linkset and separate door, then will look carefully through the glowing edge lines to make sure nothing is left un-selected.
It is also invaluable if you accidentally embed a picture or some other object inside a wall, floor or ceiling. Turn on "Hide Selected, and click the wall. That prim (and the linkset it is part of) becomes transparent. If your "missing" painting was inside the wall, you'll see it clearly now. Click on the painting. The wall re-appears, and the painting inside the wall is now selected. Use the position arrows to drag it outside the wall, and then turn off highlight transparent so you can position it properly.
Sadly, you can not use this feature to visually mute a really ugly build next tood. It only remains working while the objects are selected. and unless you turn off the editing feature that highlights the edges of selected prims, you still see where the thing is.

It is also good when you are having trouble finding items in some of those hunts.
