Is it a fact that the only way to import video and audio into SL is through a URL? If so, does anyone know a relatively inexpensive server/service on which to store these file for uptake? Or is there a process to do this non-commercially?

Yes.

Though you can upload sound bytes and string them together to have songs. The process is quite script intensive (no, I can't do it.) and each snippet will cost you the upload fee. Some places in SL will do this for a fee. I can't remember the store's names, but a few searches under music/songs should find them.

Video might be able to be done the same way, but if so, I have never seen it.

NEver looked into it, but I know several people that offer streams for DJs to play on. Not sure of the charge, nor what you would consider inexpensive. From all I know, anyone can operate a server for streaming, but you need to pay the fees and ensure your ISP has no issue with the bandwidth usage.

You may want to talk to a few DJ's and ask them for ideas. IT may benifit you to start your own server and rent out the bandwidth you don't use to other DJ's to help cover teh costs.

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

You can stream audio and video to your land if you are a parcel owner. And if you want to stream audio from your own PC, it is relatively straightforward to set up a free Shoutcast account to do this.

It involves installing Shoutcast, Winamp, and a Shoutcast plugin into Winamp. The instructions are all on the Shoutcast site.

I believe streamed video needs to be in QuickTime format, and if anyone knows about free conversion to QuickTime on Windows, and of any free QuickTime hosts, I 'd be very interested :-)

Yes, Thormec, to use video or music in SL you need to host the files somewhere on the Web.

For video you can use a normal web host or a streaming media server. For most purposes a normal web host is all you need.

It's the same for audio. You can host MP3 files on a normal web server or set up a streaming audio playlist or live music stream using a service like Live365 or Shoutcast. You can experiment with some free audio streams at MagnaTune.

If you'd like to host your video files for free you can use a service called Blip.tv. You can upload and host your video at Blip.tv and they provide you with a direct URL link to your file. Remember that your video needs to be in a format that is playable with the Quicktime software as that is what SL uses to display the video. http://blip.tv

Here are a few forum post that go into a bit more detail about how to use video in SL.

One other quick note. You must own a parcel of land to use your own video/audio. If you don't own the land you must have permission (via a group) to change the Media URL settings for your parcel.

Am I going to cause trouble if I ask why we're restricted to ten second wav. uploads ?? You cant even upload a good rattlesnake sound effect for that much...I know Ive tried for a girl whos reptilian lower half would have been enhanced no end by a good rattle :D

And Id love a few good tv sci fi theme tunes in my space station too :(

Helpful responses. Thanks. I'm farther along, certainly, than I was this morning when I posted the question.
