Are these voting machines useful anymore

I've had one of the linden "Vote" machines in my store for a long time, and people vote once in a while. Is there any reason to keep it?

What are they for?

Well at one time you could get cash back from the Lindens if lots of people visited you and voted for you. I also think maybe the votes added some increment to your dwell score, which would give you some money and help you rank higher in search listings. I don't think any of this is true anymore, but the voting machines still collect votes and send out emails when you get some. But I'm not sure they're useless -- that's why I'm asking.

Before the time of Traffic, there was Dwell and Dwellith did givith you Money, before the time of Dwell, there were Vote Boxes and Number of Votes per week did givith you Money.

But now? Vote Boxes do nothing but bringith a pang of Nostalgia to the Oldbies who, sadly, do clickith the Vote Box in Remembrance of Things Past.

I think they might be useless because as a newbie I had never heard of what they are for. The low number of votes you get might be an indication that their purpose isn't as widely known as it should be... If everyone knew what they were for and it was one of the things one learned about early on, they might prove more useful.

Prove more useful as what? A visitor counter is better at telling you how many people actually visit your land or shop or whatever. The Traffic indicator is better at showing how popular your whatever is.

Other than making a noise when you click them, they don't do anything anymore.

I cant stinkin find it, but at one point someone directed me to a link on the web that actually takes these votes and puts up a list of the votes each day/week/month in order of 'most popular' and on down. If I could find it I would post it...anyone else seen it??

yes theres other things to due what it did. But it was nice knowing someone took the time to click the thing.

I think that was the OTHER votebox that has sprung up in SL. The OP is talking about the Linden Labs Vote box. The Linden Labs Vote box doesn't send you to a website.

It was the same actual prim box, they must have done some changes to it. I remember visiting the page (very basic text and chart kinda thing) from a box that was the same as the Linden one.

It is kinda nice to see who clicks on the thing, too bad it doesnt do anything anymore.

When you open the map, if you have enabled see popular places, you will see icons for places with active vote machines. Or at least thats what a sim owner told me.

Some vote machines link to an outside website, I think its SLPopularplaces.com or something along those lines.

The official Linden vote boxes haven't actually don't anything in any official capacity for probably 2 1/2 years.

As was said earlier, it used to be used as a way to measure the credibility and quality of a build or location before Dwell (later renamed to Traffic) were introduced.

Not true. That view of the map only shows the locations currently listed in the Popular Places tab of the Search window.

Someone probably put the script from the other site into the LL votebox. I'll break my policy and say the third party site with vote boxes is www.SLPopularplaces.com It's not affiliated with LL.

I click them every time I see one. I miss the fanfare.

I put one of them in my store just cuz I like the fanfare so much!
