I have been in Second Life for two months. I am the kind of person who likes to read and research things as much as possible. I think I'm fairly smart.

And yet daily on these forums, I discover yet another way, that I have never before heard of, to be easily ripped-off or harassed in SL. I'm just a walking target. There are hundreds of ways to victimize me, and the only reasons I haven't been seriouesly victimized by anything yet seems to be the fact that there are so many millions of other targets from which to choose.

Has anyone thought of putting together a resource for newbies with information on protecting oneself from theft and abuse? Linden Labs has created a knowledge base to tell us how to give our money to Second Life. I don't think there is any knowledge base for protecting oneself in the virtual Wild West.

Talk to the people at The Shelter or at New Citizens Instutute, in-world. Both are volunteer operations aimed at helping new residents get off to a good start.

Not that I object to the idea of added informational resources in SL, but isn't that true of RL as well?

There are a number of consumer protection organizations that provide consumer self-defense information. Actually, that's part of the inspiration for my question, that I'd like to see something like that for SL.

It never occurred to me, for example, that just by clickng to a group membership for something like a club I just went to, that I could be losing money to based on the group's liabilities. That's not a situation in which I can translate my RL experience to SL.
