Okay. I'm working from home now. But to to get to work I need to use a VPN.
In this case, I need to get SL to use my Local Area Connection instead of the VPN.
My day job, ISP tech support, is alot like getting teeth pulled without anesthetic.
I'm running XP home. :D

Any solution that works will eanr the poster L$5,000.
Thanks.

Ouch. I know what you mean, I'd pay for this solution too. AFAIK VPN pretty much overrides your ISP completely and turns the computer you're linked to into your official network source. :|

My only workable solution (for XP pro, anwyays, not sure if Home supports it) was to dump VPN and go with good ol' Remote Desktop Connection in its place. may or may not be a working solution.

And if somehow it -is-, keep your money. ^^

This may or may not bork your VPN functionality, but try this:

Right Click My Network Places, Properties
Right Click your VPN connection, Properties
Click over to the Networking tab
Double Click the Internet Protocol/TCP/IP component
Click the Advanced button
Un check "Use default gateway on remote network"

Edit
Oh, and if in the off chance this works, do keep your money - This is Resident Answers, not Residents for Hire :=)

Might it be possible to run two different instances of the OS on different partitions of your machine? It would mean that you would have to log on to the OS on your "D" drive for work and then log out and to the OS on your "C" drive for personal use?

Un check "Use default gateway on remote network"

*Bounces up and down*
I knew this... me big computer no no, knew this....

*long silence*
That is... after the company system administrator came to our house and changed it so I could have the VPN to the company open and access the net as normally aside the VPN connection.

If you could give out more information, it might help. For example, what kind of network configuration do u have at home? (router, firewall etc). Which VPN client you are using, is it the Windows default one or some other one from AT&T, CISCO?

Open a command prompt, type in this command "ipconfig /all" (without quote)
Do it twice once for connection with VPN, once without and post the output of those information.

BTW, I think this post should be move to Technical Issues instead of here

Your isp connection should be completely separate and turning off the vpn connection shouldn't affect it. Or do you need your vpn running while you are playing SL?

I don't think you can run your vpn AND connect to SL through your isp using just one computer. Basically you will be opening your company network to the general internet if you do this. I don't think you'll find a legitimate way around it.

Unfortunately you will have to either disconnect your vpn and then play SL or use a router and run two computers, a work computer with vpn, and a home computer with SL.

Not correct. I am using the VPN to the company and other internet-programs as browsing, uploading from files beside each other often.... As a matter of fact, the VPN connection is right now open to check my mail at the company. I minimized it to read the latest posts here... I could run SL if it was installed on this notebook.

I would considering building a linux-based vpn server for sl users. i will try implementing this feature.

Actually, there could be a Possible solution. Not sure if it's do-able but cant hurt to try.

If you have a PC beefy enough (as in -not a $400 Dell;)), you could try either Microsoft's Virtual PC or VMWare's "VMPlayer".

Both let you run OS's "virtually". So what's that mean?

Best example: We use MS's Virtual PC in our classes. On my laptop, I have "Windows Server 2003" AND 2 Windows XP Pro clients running- All on top of Windows XP Pro. I can have them all talk back N forth to each other, acting as if it was a real network instead of Operating Systems running as a program would.

VMWare's VMPlayer is Free, but mostly Open Source OS's.
Microsoft's Virtual PC is Free also, but only seems to handle Windows. With Virtual PC, you could make an "image" of your Hard Drive, and with a bit of a conversion process, you'd have an Virtual copy of your system running on top of the original (in a window or full screen).

That way you could set up your REAL OS as the "work PC" and the Virtual one as your "SL PC".

ur solution is not cheap, just purchase a monthly-payment vps(using linux operating system, surely u can easily install any linux distributions u like), about 20-30 US Dollars per month, then manually install a vpn software. i can help to install and maintain.

You think I am not running a firewall on my laptop? :)

Well, most certainly I do. There are even 3 layers of protection concerning firewalls.... the build-in firewall in my internet-modem (as I understood, not that secure... but every little thing helps), a small box called Cisco Pix and a software firewall installed on the laptap for when I am on the road (I can connect through UMTS to the company network).

This all is paid and maintained by the company I work for. There is one rule to it, no foreign software may be installed on the notebook. It is company property. Normal browsing (as visiting forums like this one) is okay if I keep all given security rules in eye, but there it stops quickly.

Nice thing to it, my other (privat) computer is also protected by the Cisco box (but I am not depending on that alone).

Don't ask me for the details, I cannot give them. I only try to understand what people as the company system-administrator tells me (and some times I do understand him... and some times I don't :P ).

I have been trying to find a solution to this for years without success so if someone knows the answer to this question then you definitely get on my Christmas card list!

I only know that switching off the "default gateway" did the trick for both computers (laptop and desktop).
