I currrently have PC issues and can't log in. My PC currently no longer supports SL even on its lowest settings (I have to wait another 2 weeks before I can fix it :o( - I'm getting SL withdrawals! lol), so I am using SLim to communicate with my friends, however there are a growing number of them that are not appearing in my list of contacts there, yet are online.

Why would this be?
Can I do anything about it?
If not, is there an alternative to SLim that will allow me to talk to friends, without logging in?

Yep. Just mail them. You probably have one of their messages in your mail, reply to that it will be sent to them.

Now the bad side of this is they might catch your email address, it's why I never use this feature with people I don't trust 100%.

Otherwise Imprudence runs on my eee pc (ebook) so you might give it a shot and see if that works for you.

How can I mail them if they haven't mailed me first? I don't mind them having my email address - I would only do this with one or two of the longer known friends. I just can't get in to IM them right now...it crashes out after like 10seconds - not even enough to load.

What is Imprudence???

Log into your second life account. Then click Account > Contact Information and make sure this box is checked: I would like to receive offline IMs via Email

Click save changes and you need to wait until they IM you from Second Life then you can reply to their mails to answer them.

Imprudence is a viewer, you can download it here, it works with all options set to minimum on my ebook:

SLim isn't really part of the SL IM system, it's piggybacked on Voice (which has to be one of the weirdest design decisions ever). If they're not logged in to voice, they won't show up.

I would sugest using one of the text sl clients like metabolt. they let you login to sl without using graphics.

Trying to Download Imprudence... except there seems to be a problem.... every time I click the Windows Vista download it simply jumps the page further down. Does anyone know if there is a Vista version?

Thanks so much for the information so far. :)

Update : ignore this - it did say download version X ... lol... Doh! ok - I'm giving it a go :)
