Sandboxes now return items after eight hours. They used to be wiped at 3am and 3pm every day. So that was always the best time to go build there because it meant that we'd get a few hours to build before they became crammed with genitalia and other wonderful things. Today I just called into the sandbox to build myself some new genitals and found that the place was crammed. <insert sad face>

So does anybody else feel that eight hours is too long?

I know. I'm probably asking this question too soon. I'm sure the Linden responsible is just testing and trying find the optimal auto-return time.

It's a difficult call. The old system had a fault that in the hour or two prior to 3am or 3pm, the sandboxes would be perilously close to being out of prims - in fact in the last week I saw the sims actually run out of prims a lot. And in terms of usable land area and being crammed with junk, it was certainly used out even before deletion times. That's with two deletions a day.

Granted if you were able to time your visits to just after deletion, it was a good system as you got a free pick of where to build and an empty sim....however I guess that the new system allows for a more continuous cycling of objects rather than mass peaks and troughs.

I will agree that probably 8 hours is too long, I would prefer 6 hours, which is probably long enough for people to build and finish their work for small projects and *just about* long enough for people with long projects to get a decent amount of work done before they have to save.

My personal bugbear with public sandboxes is the amount of objects that are created and just left there...there are vehicle sandboxes, people should take their cars and planes there really. And even if they do rez them there, why leave them lying around after they're gone (and their builds for that matter)? Whenever I go to sandboxes I always delete my builds after I've saved them or even if I want to bin them, even though I know they will be returned to me or deleted eventually. The worst are those massive ships people seem to keep buying...over a thousand prims (so over 1/15th of prims in the sim) and a huge area of land taken up and then just abandoned for hours!

I know, I know, a lot of people in the sandboxes are new, but it would make life a lot easier!! (rant over)

I have been to few sandboxes where people pick up items. They do exist.
Fur Nation is my favorite until others stopped picking up after themselves and hippie pay took over the place. I quit going there. All there is in one area is now tons of Hippie pay boxes. I think Hippie pay is scam because some of same places that I made mistake of giving my email from another thing I signed up pre SL flood my email now.
Alot of those companies want you to buy something too in order to get certain deal.
I assume Hippy pay is same way but I may be wrong.
I never go to popular busy sandboxes any more because of all the stuff left.
When I was new though and was making very tiny objects or they flew away I often couldn't find them. When it happens at my shop or home I literally have to return all the items.
Sandboxes are nice especially if you need items returned. I just wish there was option to return others including your own right away if they are abandon or lost in sandboxes.

I think 8 hours is an improvement. Lets see what happens in the next days. But I agree that 6 hours is even better.
That big red space ships are freebies somewhere, isn't it? Becose is very anoying that every day there is at least one or two in the sandboxes using a lot of space and prims. There are also docens of abandon houses all the time. And how to forget the stupid griefers with their stupid weapons and cagers and that stuffs.

I still insist that Lindens should create a gropu of volunteers to keep the Sandboxes clean and free of violations to its rules. This are vital sims for the residents and should have some control.

They'd rather not create a group that has the potential for the whole 'us or them' mentality, although they need something for the boxes!

I avoid the Linden Sandboxes like a plague nowadays, even though I was once a regular at them. Between the crammed pack mess and after about the 13th time in a 30 minute span of being messed with while working, (my definition of being mess with is having to ask a curse word spouting, gun toting idiot to get OFF my skirt), I decided to use private sandboxes belonging to the groups I'm in.

8 hours does still seem rather long to me too, because some people will still see it as a 'temporary store place.' I wish they'd just code it that if you left the box, the items would return to your inventory. I know this would be inconvenient for those of us with sucky network connections, but I'd willingly put up with it, if it meant I could go back to using the Linden sandboxes.

I think this would be ideal. It would have to happen after the owner has been away for 10 minutes or so. Imagine being pushed/shot out of a sandbox after spending a couple of hours building something? ArRRrgh! :)

I think 2 hours should be enough.

I used to build in Plum. The auto-return was only an hour and I seemed to manage okay. The only reason why I stopped building there was because the sim seemed to be having issues and ran scripts slowly.

I admit, an hour does sound scary though. :)
