What's the limit of how much you can put on a notecard?

Hello everyone:

I am on a mission to reduce my inventory. (I've been seeing a lot of this around on different blogs, there must be something in the water!) I read a great tip the other day about putting landmarks onto note cards, maybe with a little description. It takes up less room in your inventory, and then you can get rid of all the extra LMs. Plus, you can pass the note card to friends and share your shopping tips, favorite ballrooms, and so on.

I decided I would make a card or two for LMs to my favorite stores. I made a card with about 15 LMs, each with a few words of description (things like "expensive but beautiful!" or "Great sales, nice owner!";) I think I might have also saved a note card on there as well, something about adjusting prim skirts. However, when I tried to save it I got an error message. I think I had too much on the card, and so it would not save.

I would appreciate it if anyone can tell me the limits of what can go on a note card. I know it should be for short things, and not the length of a novel! But will it only fit a certain amount of text, or number of LMs, pictures, other note cards, or objects? I've looked for the answer myself and cannot find it. Any help would be most welcome, and if this has already been answered please just point me in the right direction and I will happily follow the link. :-)

Thanks,
India

I can't say about objects/clothing, but I've made a business LM notecard (which gets longer everytime I update it) and despite the loading times when you open it taking forever, I have yet to find a limit. I'm pretty sure there must be well over 100 LMs, each with a description on there.
if you go to http://www.forumcartel.com/members you can see just how many I've gotten onto it.

Well, according to http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Limits, the maximum size for a notecard is 65,536 bytes. I have no idea how many landmarks that might be, but I am certain it's more than 15.

You can't embed stuff in a notecard that's not full perms. I don't know if that can have been the problem. What was the error message? Quite often, when SL is feeling under the weather, notecards and stuff don't save properly.

Hi, SL lets us put 64K in a notecard. Attachments look small in copy and paste but there is inventory data inside, so a note can be bigger than it looks. ASCII letters much are smaller than the rest of the Unicode space so maybe you will want to avoid them if you do not really need them.

I can remember SL throwing me a couple of error messages before now, but that tended to be when the asset servers were on the blink.
I'd suggest you write the words in a notepad/wordpad document, then copy and paste to a notecard, add 1 LM and try to save, THEN add the rest of the LMs, saving often. that way, you still have the words, and you haven't wasted too much time fitting LMs in place if its not going to let you save. Just check before you start putting the really hard work in.

If it throws an error at you, wait a while, maybe go to a quiet place and try again. If it is still not letting you, I'm afraid I'm lost as to what else there could be wrong.

I'm not convinced you've hit the limit if I can manage to fit that many LMs in a notecard without issues.

But when you embed something in a notecard, isn't that just a pointer to the appropriate entry in the asset server? That's the only data that's being transferred, at least as I understand it, plus perhaps something about perms.

Maybe not even perms - to embed stuff in a notecard it has to be full perm. I seem to remember hearing something about an exploit that involved embedding things in a notecard, which then became full perm when extracted.

I would never trust anything important to a notecard. Notecards are scratchpads.

Blimey. I hadn't realised it was quite so much. How did you read it?

Notes go in VFS, that is easy to read. There are some clients that can make backups now too, I think they will keep the same format.

I know someone that sends her group a resource note card it is now full. Solution? Use a box, put the note card in it with boxes of things you want to distribute

Thanks very much!

This is very helpful!

I did manage to put about 30 LMs onto 3 note cards with very minimal notes. That saved me a lot of room already! I used them for the sim where I live and work as a rental agent...I figured if I split them up it still made sense.

Cerise, your post really opened my eyes...as much as I thought I was using minimal descriptions, all the spaces and hitting the return key adds a lot to the note. Claire, thanks for the tip, writing it out in Notepad would at least save me re-typing it!

Ann, I hear what you are saying. I am not saving anything I cannot get again...just trying to consolidate things and save some space. Thank you for bringing up the point, it reminds me to save some very important stuff someplace else in case of emergency.

You are all correct, you can only embed things on a note card that are full perms. It is supposedly extremely rare for LMs to NOT be full perm, but I did a check of the ones I was trying to use, and they were all full perm. However, the other note cards or pics I was using might not have been, and I have no energy to check on those right now, hehe.

I did get the error message again, but I forgot to copy it down. :-/ Since I am sure I will be trying this again, I will make sure to do it next time I see it. I did notice that it happened when things were a little laggy, and when I tried to multi-task...for example, the card was saving and I got a group notice...I clicked "discard" and next thing I knew it, the card was not saving.

Jenshae, I like your idea...wonder if I can box up some of these silly things? Awww, heck with it, I am going to start hitting the delete key and get rid of a bunch.
