I started playing SL a little over a year ago. I had a blast with my Touring Balloon. I even met my fiance in SL. We ended up canceling our accounts when the whole stolen password thing hit.
He and I recently started playing again and I've been trying to get my balloon up and running. We used to fly from one end of SL to the other - looking at beautiful builds, laughing at Bush signs, shaking our heads at some of the monterous ugly builds...generally, having a blast without a headache (well, except when I'd crash us into mountain ranges.
Now, I can't even take off from our land because we are surrounded by ban lines. Some invisible, some not. One even takes my balloon and pops it onto his land while orbiting me. So fine, I'll start the trip elsewhere. It's hard enough to find somewhere to rez it that allows scripts. Fine, found it. Start the balloon up, attempt to get it up to altitude to start a trip. WHAM orbited and banned.
WTF. What is going on? Did I miss something major? Since when can you not have a flying vehicle? Oh, and I can't even just fly from one place to another as my wee little av either...same thing...WHAM orbit!
I don't pester people. I'm quiet, I'm calm. I don't interrupt people when they are building or busy. Why can't I just fly? Are there scripts to overcome the horrid banniness of SL? Or should I just stomp off in a hissy fit and find something "better" to do?

they raised the height of the ban lines and a lot more people use them now as well due to the "unverified" accounts the lines are much higher then they used to be so you probably just flew right over them before personally i dont think they need tobe that high I used to fly a helicopter all over SL was very fun now I can't fly at that height if i want to i have to go way up to 500+ and theni can't see anything so that is your problem i am afriad..

Ban lines are set to 50m unless you are explicitly banned (Using the "Ban the following avatars" by name. If you are banned by name it is to infinity (768m). So you should be able to fly your balloon at 50m and be fine. Unless they have a "Security System". Those will orbit you sometimes with no warning, and unfortunately you can't detect them very easily. Knowledge Base|Parcel Banning

what a drag

Im also an avid fan of balloon exploration. Ive also taken groups on cross country excursions to see the sights. Havent done so in awhile. But if its gotten as bad as some of the reports Ive read, then its a damn shame. Has to be a better way for the recluse types to keep their so called privacy and still allow those who traverse the skies for sightseeing to enjoy their aircraft. A long time ago, when I was a bitter unsocial hermit, the FAA made me remove my anti-aircraft gun from my backyard and will no longer allow me to shoot down passing jetliners in RL. I argued with them, "BUT ITS MY LAND!! I NEED MY PRIVACY!!" They replied, " The most an airplane is gonna do to you is dump its toilet over your driveway." Made sense. Now I think if it flys over your house and nobody can jump down into your private pool from it, let it fly over your house. We just need the tools to make it so.

Private heights

As a newcommer to 2nd Life... i'm having problems myself with this issue.... short of teleporting everywhere.. i have difficult flying across the land of SL due to limited access barriers... and i wanted to create/sell non commercial dirigibles for other people to use due to the lack of roads.. but it seems even building these are starting to be a waste of time....
My suggestion to Linden Labs would be to set these barriers at a fixed height... maybe 2 to 4 stories high... and perhaps indicating these on the maps with coloured shading.. This would help getting around SL and still being able to se the sights

From what I understand, the new 'dont let objects enter the parcel' feature is a bigger problem than ban lines.

ballooning indeed screwed

I attempted a balloon trip last night. We made it across two sims at low speed before getting hit with a full parcel message. The balloon ended up in my lost and found and we fell 120 meters to a splash landing. Upon rezzing a fresh balloon we tried again. 120 meters up, heading due south. Passed through three more "full parcels" but the balloon survived and seemed uneffected by these warnings. After successfully crossing ten sims without being blown out of the sky, we recieved another " full parcel" warning over a nightclub, this time tossing the balloon back into my lost and found and dropping us onto the roof of a shopping mall. Full parcels, and the way the system now handles them appears to be the major contributer here as far as flying problems in SL is concerned.

The only solution I've found is to carefully fly over protected roads. It's a pain.

Full parcels is surely a physical limit on the servers. Makes sense to merely refuse entry whether teleporting, walking or flying. Can't expect the software to eject a present occupier to make way for an aviator? I assume the ludicrous height of the notorious banlines are to cover the plethora of skyboxes - another hazard to flying Nice balloon tour in Bliss

Full parcels are NOT a server limit. There is an explicit overhead allowance in sims *specifically* for the use of vehicles, and whether a parcel is full or not has never had anything to do with whether a vehicle could enter it or not... it just meant that when you got off the vehicle in a full parcel it would be returned immediately. This behaviour changed recently, and it's a bug. Also, Linden Labs has changed the way access restrictions work. Previously they would bounce you off, but now they will unsit you and throw you off the land... but not completely. The aircraft you're on never gets any indication that you've been kicked off, and it still holds your controls and animation so you can't move. In addition, you can sometimes get thrown into ANOTHER access controlled parcel and stuck there. Both of these are simply unacceptable, but Linden Labs doesn't even seem to consider them bugs. As for the comment about ban lines only being 50 meters up... have you folks ever flown in a hot air balloon? 50 meters might as well be 500 if you're in a balloon that's at all realistic. To the original poster: once you find a place you can fly (I'd suggest one of the corporate sims like Nissan 1 to play with) wait till you run nto the jerkiness problem.

While we still have a the "full parcel" glitch, a week or so ago, all Caledon Sims are colocated, which makes sim crossing MUCH easier. I've been flying from one end to the other without too much difficulty. And we don't have ban lines. Airships, balloons and other Victorian/Steampunk conveyances are more than welcome! I'm in the middle of designing a pedal powered airship right now. I am probably going to make this one a "wearable" vehicle (I've already made a cycle like that for the Londonderry museum). By attaching it to the avatar and using the avatar motion to control the vehicle, I think sim crossings will be much easier (it's treated no differently than someone wearing a prim dress, for example). Ban lines will still be a problem though

From: Virrginia Tombola By attaching it to the avatar and using the avatar motion to control the vehicle, I think sim crossings will be much easier( My horse works that way and I've had no problem riding from one sim to another. And using "Always Run" makes the horse gallop quite nicely.
