First post to the forums, and I may have worked this out before it gets answered
I have been saving as .bmp, but now my snaps save a .j2c I have used the ctrl` combo, but the save window does not open? I am sure I can find a converter for .j2c but would really like to not have to deal with this as I am a very interested in the photography of SL. So, how do I get that save window open?!?
Anyone else encountered this and able to help? Thanks

Funky, I've never seen that format...
Ctrl-Shift-S will snapshot for you...and it should default to .bmp
I don't have SL open right now, so have a look around in either the snapshot dialog box, or in preferences.

Yes, the default save format is still BMP if you use CTRL+ALT+S to take a snapshot. As for J2C converters, I've used SlowView and IrfanView.

Wow, thanks for the fast answers, Nope, ctrl+alt+s is sending jpegs but I can't seem to open them. So I will use the converters and see what else I can do. More ideas are appreciated, if I could just get that darn save window reopened I could change it!

Really really certain it's ctrl/shift/s but see the menu entry, which I can't remember which tab LOL

In the Client menu there is an option that says Compress Snapshots to Disk, if that is ticked it seems to save as the J2C format, if you untick it then the snapshots will save as normal. At least that is what I have found!
The program I used to view the file and then save as a .bmp is called Advanced Batch Converter

I'm oldfashioned... I always use the PrintScreen key and paste it into Photoshop. Usually I want to edit a photo anyway. Btw, is there a way to completely hide the SL interface?

From: Aleister Montgomery Btw, is there a way to completely hide the SL interface? You can do it from the Snapshot window by unchecking a box, but I don't know about straight screenprints. It's alt-z in WoW...does that help?

doesn't cost anything to snapshot to disk. As far as hiding the UI, snapshotting to disk(or upload) works great for that and will also hide HUD attachments.

Hmmm...I wasn't even aware that snapshot to disc was free. Groovy. Not that I'll use it, "print screen" is still quicker. I wish there was the ability to create this macro: Print Screen > Alt-Tab to PS > Ctrl-N > Ctrl-V That would be a nice macro...
