With some Instant Messenger programs there is an "appear offline" option such that, even if you are online it appears to others that you are not. Specifically, I was wondering if there were some way to configure SL so that even when you recent an IM from someone they receive a message indicating that you're offline?

Closest thing you're gonna find is the "busy" status.. otherwise, nope, doesn't exist.

Nope, but you can go on invisible by unchecking the "friends can see me online" icon in your communication window.

From: Rasecel Masatada Nope, but you can go on invisible by unchecking the "friends can see me online" icon in your communication window. If I do that and someone happens to send me an IM, will they get a message that I'm offline or will the IM be delivered and my online status discovered?

And it's also trivial to determine your actual status via script, or by checking the info in groups you belong to. Truly the only way to appear offline is to actually be offline, and be playing with an alt account instead.

Actually it depends on the viewer you use. Some third party viewers give you more defined auto responses to IMs. So with the right viewer you could make it appear you were not online if you tried hard enough. As long as you don't get busted out and about.

I've found that there is far less drama if you just tell them that you are going to be busy for a few hours, than to uncheck that box, and have to explain why you unchecked it. Yes, you will be discovered....and it won't be pretty.

Or, you could simply care less what others think about you and act accordingly.

You can change the message that a person receives if they IM you while in the Busy Mode in your preferences. Change the words to say the same message that they would receive if you were truly offline.
Second Life: User not online - message will be stored and delivered later.
But, the offer teleport button will be highlighted so they will be able to see that you are online.
Rather best to just be honest with them.

The 'auto-response' option in Emerald tells them that it is an auto-response: [16:48] LittleMe Jewell (auto-response): Second Life: User not online - message will be stored and delivered later. Rather than: [16:46] Second Life: User not online - message will be stored and delivered later. From: Hope Harbrough You can change the message that a person receives if they IM you while in the Busy Mode in your preferences. Change the words to say the same message that they would receive if you were truly offline. This actually will work if you set your "busy" text to 'Second Life: User not online - message will be stored and delivered later.' Though, as mentioned, there are many other ways to determine that you really are online.

It also tells you who is on line via their calling cards

From: Del Wellman It also tells you who is on line via their calling cards Group member lists will also show status. You can run, but ya can't hide!

From: Del Wellman It also tells you who is on line via their calling cards If the person has unchecked the box to allow you to see their online status, will Emerald still show them online via the calling card? The regular LL viewer does not, just like the web page will not. Likewise, does the Offer Teleport button show lit up for them on your profile if you have checked the option of "allow only my friends and groups to see me online" and yet you have unchecked the online status box of a person on your friends list? Like others have said though, there are many other ways -- groups and scripted scanners being the easiest and most commonly used ways.

Okay I'm busted lol. I really don't have a lot of people IMing me. Guess I'm not very popular, and most of the time I like it that way. Cuts down on having to worry about things like this.
