If my mom ever gets a Computer that will actually work with SL [at this point just be stable after the last mess she got], will there be any issues with us both being on Second Life? Or someone else being on Second Life on her computer?

This may sound stupid to most people but we have ran into sites where some staff member did not grasp " We are both online on seperate computers but useing the same ISP because we have a router".

Obviously there would be lag but my concern is if anything or anyone would decide two accounts cannot be acessing SL at the same time from the same ISP.

It will be a very long time before my mom gets a new computer at this rate but I'd like to know ahead of time.

[We actually have three comps constantly on the internet at the moment.]

Actually, it doesn't need a Linden to answer. :)

Yes, multiple computers on the same internet connection can be using SL at the same time. I know several husband/wife groups, roommates, etc. Of course, they each need seperate accounts.

You can also run two two instances of SL on one computer, with two different AVs logged in, but you don't need to do that.

yes if your computer wont blow up and your internet connection doesn't self destruct from all that data being squeezed through the straw you can run as many accounts off a computer from a single connection as you want. You have to install the game in different folders to open it up and I would not even try this cause one is enough for me but yes she can in fact use the same connection you are etc as long as you connections etc can handle that much bandwidth without going on strike and refusing to work :)

One instance of SL running on my computer heats the processor and video card enough to cook eggs.... TWO instances? I don't want to mop up molten computer juice out of my rug.

But yes... mutiple computers on a home network seems to work fine. A word of warning though.. Wireless routers create interesting issues in SL. So when it doubt, use wires if you can.

My husband and I both access SL from our home, in the same room, and have been doing so for over a year with no problems! :)

Multiple instances will run just fine off the single installation.

I use Second Life frequently while my wife and housemate are both using Second Life on other machines in the house, and it impacts our bandwidth a bit but works just fine.

As for SL heating up your machine, funny story... I just got word back from the repair shop yesterday, and it turns out that one of the laptops we were using to run Second Life literally got fried :) Part of the casing on the wireless NIC was bubbled from the heat, and the video card had been fried as well. Whoah. Can't be attributed to Second Life, of course, but it's still interesting. Second Life is all we ever used that laptop for, besides using Google to look stuff up.

we have run 3 wired and 2 wi-fi all at the same time before... runing on a 10000k dsl line no lag (except from the low end box) even the wireless laptops run great.

I *CAN* attribute the death of my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card to Second Life. However that doesn't mean I hold them legally responsible for it's replacement (the TOS clearly exonerates them in this case). However the program is VERY video intensive.. and causes a great deal of heating.

The one thing they are very serious about, is the video card requirements.

Just tried it because you had me confused there but nope I can't open it more then once from the same file on my desktop

there's some "tricks" you have to do, to get it to work. One of the easiest ways its to edit the shortcut and enable "Run with differrent credentials" checkbox under "Advanced Properties". this will allow you to log in as another "user" of your computer. (in windows XP.. create a second user account for your computer.. this account *MUST* have a password assigned).

Then, double click the shortcut, and select "log in as" select the other person and password for that windows account.. and log into SL.

Another, les complicated way is to just simply "switch user" in windows, and run a second instance of the SL program from a different user's desktop.

This is gonna be HUGELY processor/memory intensive.. and is not "officially supported" by any means.

There are other ways (including using stripped down, text only builds of the SL client.... aka "bots";).

right click on the second life icon on your desktop. Choose properties. In the Target line, add this:

"c:\program files\secondlife\secondlife.exe" -multiple

the part that you're adding is the -multiple

keep in mind that it does slow down your computer (in Windows) to run more than one session.

I'm doing this too! It's so much easier on both of us, because if one of the other isn't rezzing correctly we can nudge and snicker.

nono i don't want to run any just was thinking i had gone nuts :)

I did play another game where i did this but I seem to remember just installing it in a couple of different folders and running shortcuts from there seemed the easiest solution to me. Tt was sims online people used to take delight in watching me argue with myself lol. Some people never caught on but I had a husband and wife team and the wife used to push the husband around all the time.

My RL daughter and I are on SL at the same time, using different computers in the same room, for many hours every day.

We seem we have a lot less problems than a great majority of the people who post here.

latency is a problem with most wireless products .. and that's a big cause a packet loss. things are changing though. draft-n (high speed) wireless products are in most stores now (if a little on the expensive side) and the connection is more like a wired one .. in terms of both speed and latency.

the netgear draft-n kit (router and wireless adapter) i bought a couple of months ago actually outperform my desktop's wired ethernet adapter in terms of speed, and latency is the same. the money we spend just to make SL more playable on our laptops.

I have had up to 4 Macs running from a single router and not encountered any slow down at all. I have noticed a slight delay in sound, such as music from a live performance, between a G5 Desktop and a G4 Laptop in the same room. But only a half a second or so, kinda sounds like an echo.
