making particles visible from further away

Is there any way to make particles visible from further away?
Increasing particle count / draw distance does not seem to do it.

I ask because I'm writing a particle "beacon" that needs to be able to be seen from 50m or so away.

I believe the rule is...the larger the emitter...the further away the particles can be seen.

That's right. You either need to link the particle emitter to a larger object or make the emitter itself larger. I had this problem and solved it by making the emitter a 10m diameter, transparent, phantom sphere.
