You can only render about 5 or 6 lights at a time. It could be you are seeing all the lamps in your store, but they are taking up those resources so you don't see the face light.

:)

You might've set 'Show sun and moon only" instead of "Show local lights" or however it's termed.

That's in Graphics in Preferences.

honestly im not sure if i have windlight, i think i do, all i know is i updated a few weeks ago,and at first it was working fine, then it stopped after i did some settings. and i went to preferances /graphics, it doesnt have an opption for sun and moon, it only has one slide bar thingy. it normally wouldnt bother me, since i seem to be the only one who cant see my own light, but i needed to set it down so i dont shine all over the place. lol

To get the sun and moon/lights options etc. you have to tick "Custom."

Update: That was the answer.

I think I read somewhere that it's actually a hardware issue that bugs some graphics cards when running SL, which might explain why your friends can see your facelight while you can't. It's true that when Local Lighting is set, you supposedly can only see the NEAREST 6 light sources. I would think that a facelight would be the closest one, so it wouldn't be excluded as a visible light source. You might try checking/unchecking the Basic Shaders and Atmospheric Shaders boxes under the Graphics tab in Preferences, to see if that makes a difference. The only drawback to that is by unchecking these, you'll probably lose most of your Windlight effects.

Try typing in open chat "/2 light on" without the quotes.

It's a bit more complicated than that though. It does go by "nearest", but that's not based on normal distance but adjusted distance calculated from actual distance, intensity, range and priority for dynamic lights.

/8/03/259102/1.html
From: Kitty Barnett
Since it seems to come up a lot:

r = light radius
i = light intensity
d = distance between avie and light

static light = (d * (1 / i) ) - r
dynamic light = (d * (1 / i) ) - (1.25 * r)

Or in other words: a dynamic light acts as a static light of the same intensity, but with a 25% larger radius

---

Assume 4 lights (to make it easier they all have intensity 1.0):

light 1 - r = 2 ; d = 0 (OP's attached light - d is 0 for simplicity's sake)
light 2 - r = 5 ; d = 2 (static light)
light 3 - r = 10 ; d = 4 (another avie's face light)
light 4 - r = 10 ; d = 6 (static light)

Calculate the adjusted distance for each light:

light 1 = 0 - 1.25 * 2 = -2.5
light 2 = 2 - 5 = -3
light 3 = 4 - 1.25 * 10 = -8.5
light 4 = 6 - 10 = -4

The order the lights will end up sorted in is (from low to high): 3, 4, 2, 1

---

Which illustrates the op's problem of having only a subtle facelight attached. In the example it sorts last, and if there was a maximum of three lights, it would be the first to go despite being the closest by far.

---

Some trivia:
- if flycam is enabled, the lighting is calculated based on camera position, not avatar position
- selected lights have their adjusted distance reduced by 10,000 (or in other words, if you have less than 6 lights actively selected, they'll override anything closer which is useful if you want to take a picture and make sure that certain lights actually light regardless of what else is around)
- Advanced / Rendering / Info Dispays / Lights will show you all the light sources around you (the prim that has the light will be highlighted blue with a white bounding box around it and the light radius renders as an unintuitive yellow bounding box).
You can't tell which lights are active - although that looks like it should be relatively simple to add - but at least you can tell how many lights there are and how far they extend. If you want to see the actual spheres you can edit the prims and make sure Tools / Show Light Radius for Selection is selected, but that won't work for other people's attached lights.

Theres a part of me that says thank you god, the face light crew is getting as bad as the blingtards did. They show up places, and it's like a supernova has gone off. I don't understand the ones that seem to be comming in with lightrig hair either I bought some not so long ago and it came with lights but at least I could edit the parts and turn them off, and I haven't been back to that store since. A face light doesn't have to be set to 10m radius like most seem to be, this is light polution, and I for one am sick of the attitude.

I have my light set down low so its only enough to take the strange shadows away from my face. the only draw back i can see in the face light is my avatar is now more vain than ever . i may have to send her to therapy before this gets out of hand! lol
I want to thank you all for your help and the fast respondses. its fixed now. with preferance/graphics.

I have noticed that with my video card (and ys, the latest drivers.. brand new card too) that I can only render *2* local lights if I have "atmospheric shaders" enabled. Turning that off, gets me 6 lights again.

I've noticed when I use a face light, I have several as I'm sure some of us do, that my friends' ring around the rosy face lights, blight my own one out making it seem like I have none on.
Pivot facing away and back to face light normal again.

local lights counts per prim with light too... so those with the 10 light spheres on their face and body are not getting any real benefit from some of them... and prevent others from getting any from theirs

There's no need for facelights. Just modify your advanced sky settings. You can make those settings permanent by modifying your day cycle editor.
