IIRC there are some scene updates that are performed at intervals and SL reports packet loss when it looses them because it's too busy to deal with them all. If I haven't get myself confused, that could be what's causing the spikes.

Lots of intermittent packet losses here within those dates! It's really annoying, I'll be missing whole chunks of chat and other data (chat is essential to my job, not talking about idle chatting here).
The next question is: what can we do about it? |

I've been meaning to pipe in on one of these conversations for months. My packet loss is consistently 0. I I have never seen it reach 5. Sometimes it'll pop up to 1 or 2% for a few seconds but then it's right back down.
Is it at all possible that your problem is just a slow or crappy internet connection? *Edit: It's worth noting that I don't constantly stare at my packet loss so maybe it sneaks up to absurd numbers when I'm not looking and I just don't notice. |

The point is looking at the poll, most people have that, if it was just a ISP issue, it would affect only a part of the residents. Seems to me that the minority is the ones not having this problem. And adding to that that pings in perfomance window basic (ctrl+shift+1) seem at least to me to be stable, it looks not connection related. |

It would be interesting to see traceroutes to compare those who experience lots of packet loss and those who don't. The problem may not be at either the ISP level or the Second Life level. The problem could be with a Tier 2 or Tier 1 network.

The packet loss stat by itself doesn't really tell you much. There are other things in the performance stats that will give you a better idea of where the problem is..
From the knowledge base... Ping Sim: How long it takes data to go from your computer to the region you're currently in. This is largely dependent on your connection to the Internet. If Ping Sim is high but Ping User is not, the server might be having problems. Ping User: How long it takes data to go from Second Life to you. If Ping User is high, your connection might be having problems. (Your ISP might be congested, or your local network traffic might be blocked by a router or internet security/firewall software.) |

My packet loss is terrible, my avatar walks with a jerky manner, my chat comes popping up 10 or 20 seconds later. I glide and get stuck in mountains. I have a brand new computer that is mora than powerful enough, I have fine interent connections - so I must blame SL. Lindens please listen to us! Fix this problem! Please!

What is a "high" number for Ping Sim and/or Ping User? The knowledge base screen shot shows 118 mse and 119 mse. Are those high, low or just right? Or is it simply a matter of comparing which number is higher than the other? *Ping!* There went my brain.

Can't remember what the different pings are, but I usually get 100-200 depending on time of day. |

What is a "high" number for Ping Sim and/or Ping User? I usually see 90-120 when things are running well but I've got a really good DSL plan and am only a few hops from the really big tubes. If you're in, say, the Pitcairn Islands, a "good" ping for you might be very different. If you're in North America, anything under 150 or so is probably ok and I wouldn't worry too much unless you're frequently over 250. For the most part: if ping sim is a lot higher than ping user, the sim or SL-in-general is probably having troubles. If they're both a lot higher than normal (normal for you), there's probably a network problem somewhere between you and the sim. If ping user is a lot higher than ping sim, I have no idea. |
