I was recently excited to gain media control over a piece of land. Since my winamp has a bit of difficulty trying to play video while SL is in the foreground, I thought it would be cool to fire up one of the video shoutcast streams in SL.
Sadly.. it seems that the shoutcast video format is not real compatable with the SL video playback. I can plug a shoutcast video stream into the AUDIO line, and *listen* to the stream.. but no video.
Anyways, I've been kind of dissappointed by this turn of events. I wanted to fire up MST3k while I worked on my store. So... I'm asking a question.. a question best answered by residents with experience in this sort of thing.
Where can I find SL-compatable video streams? Audio seems to be easy to come by (shoutcast) but video.. not so much.
Little help here?

Where are all they video streams?

Same question. I've only been able to find one load of TV channels (americafreetv) that seem to transmit in QuickTime format. Apart from all the highly illegal video streams that seem to be available im many SL video stores where is the legal stuff? I would be nice if a format other than QuickTime could be used or am I missing something?
Regards, Cookie

SL has a list of compatible movie formats, ranging from QuickTime MOV, Flash v3, Mpeg, Mp4, WMV etc. It also depends on what you have installed on your system, you need upto date versions of codex (compressor/decompressor) on your system, to view the various formats. Assuming you have Windows OS, I would suggest you download and install the latest QuickTime and asign all the formats to QT, and it will install the codex for you (for the most part, some are by license only).

From: Jax Huskerdu Just curious, can you bring in vids from youtube and myspace? Tried the URL,but not having any luck. Those are 'Poster' html pages, in other words, the web page renders the movie using ActiveX, once the movie has been rendered, it can't be rerendered in the SL client. The ActiveX is an applette programme that runs locally. You have to have a link direct to the source file.

Watching the movie together and comment about it is only possible if you hit play at the same time. If you want to stream the same video at the same time to all the viewers you need a streaming server. M.

If you want to stream the same video at the same time to all the viewers you need a streaming server. M. Well you are right and wrong.. right because a true RSTP stream that is multicasting/unicasting much like live radio etc. Wrong because.. RSTP is also used for showing media without it actually leaving the streaming server (not downloaded onto the viewers system to watch), its rendered on the fly.. but is not timeframe related. You can move forward and backwards through the stream at anytime. The one way to show a single media to every viewer at the same time is to use a media player that broadcasts the url at a given time.. anyone entering the parcel/land after that, will not be in sync. The downside, is mainly cost. To maintain an exact stream sync'd through the whole timeframe to lots of viewers, those type of servers cost a lot of money and a potentially have large bandwidth connections. Mulitcasting being the highest cost, unicasting is slightly cheaper. Multicasting means the server has to stream all the data to every viewers system. Unicasting is when those with a bit of bandwidth or PC power to spare, act like a slave server to those that struggle a bit, so they get multi-feeds to even out the whole peer to peer network.
